I bought a 5mw violet of ebay and it just came today but it says on the laser its 50mw. Is there anyway I can tell if it really is or they just didn't mark it right and do I need glasses for it?

The laser could be really 50mW. These 405nm laser are almost overspec. The reason they put 5mW in the advertising is the law. Above 5mW the laser must be FDA compliant.

You should be cautious about the laser.

Unless you have a lpm you have no way to know the power.

It should not burn if it is 50mW. Usually they start to burn at 90mW.
But try it. Nothing to loose.

It's also fun to take a 405nm laser, and while looking at the ground, draw a shape really quick in front of you (like a star) and turn it off. Then start moving your head away. If you see the same shape you drew fading away slowly while looking around, you'll know what I'm talking about :p

Pretty much all the '5mW' newwish pens run anywhere from 40-80mW.

If they set them at 5mW, no one would buy them since the output would be next to invisible.
