200mw red died... BUT...

my 200mw red DX (or dilda) burnt out... so i had to fix it...

i used this sled from a sony

made a ddl driver.. it glitched to around 500mA... but it works awesome

put together

beam with some smoke

comparing with green and blu ray

comparing with 5mw..

doesnt look like much but i burnt through a cd case in 2 seconds from about 2 feet away

yea... u never know how long theyll last...

ive probly used this for about 2 hours already... recharged the batteries about 5 times.. lol

not sure of the mw.. but a lot if it can burn through a cd case focused to infinity from a foot away in about 8 seconds

You should insulate the driver from the case with some electrical tape to prevent shorts.

oo yea... i forgot to take a picture with the wire tape on it... even tho theres too many pictures already... i figured out the wire tape after i put it together for the 1st time... it got really hot with no light... then i noticed there was noting on the inside keeping it from short circuting

the driver gets hot faster then the diode

WHat resistor did you use on the driver?

i used two 10 ohms... but i think it glitched up to 500mA... because before with the two 10 ohms it was at about 250mA

it FINALLY died

i retested the lil driver i made... it was putting out 592mA...lol... so over 300mw

before my '50mw' DX green laser broke.. my red laser was brighter

I'm surprised it lasted that long at so much current - did you use it very often?

That lm317 could run very hot like that... especially at 500 mA when dropping about 2 volts in an enclosed space with even its little flange removed. It will go into thermal shutdown and reduce current when it overheats though, so perhaps your LD was saved by that...

i used it every day for at least 5 minutes and i could feel the heat from the driver before i could ever feel any heat from the diode..
