200mW Green Laser Pointer

First off, that is not a "pointer". A pointer is anything under 5 mW, which that is 40 times more powerful than any "pointer".

Second, is this your first real laser? If it is, I would strongly suggest under 100 mW, instead of 200. I just ordered a 50 mW green rayfoss flx, which I believe is perfect for a beginner. Focusable, which means it can "just" light matches, pop balloons, and turn off street lights, etc... It also has a key lock, meaning my idiot friends can't turn it on if they find it.

Also, use the search bar. Look for reviews, pictures, etc. Honestly, that price scares me. That will almost definitely be underspec, meaning it will not output 200 mW.

If you do get those, GET GOGGLES!!!!!!!! 200 mW is no joke, and you can only look at a high powered laser twice, one with each eye:drool:

Good luck.

How is this NOT a laser pointer? I don't see anything written that says laser pointers "must be under 5mW."

I know it's a bad source, but --> Wikipedia <-- continually calls lasers above 5mW as being "laser pointers."

Of course, you shouldn't point a >5mW laser and a <5mW laser at the same things (example: PEOPLE), but it's still, nonetheless, a laser pointer.

I do agree on the 200mW being a bit overkill for your first laser point though. Check out the laser pointer I'm getting in my sig Magic. It'll be my first. Focusable, 50mW, and hopefully capable of all the things TheRunner has stated.

Looks a nice laser... I've got the key chain coming from them that's meant to be 200mw there is a review on here for the keychain

FDA states anything above 5 mW must not be sold as a pointer, because they are not "eyesafe" (your natural blink reflex will not protect you from any permanent damage). Wikipedia says a lot of things, it used to say the great depression was caused by Chuck Norris:bowdown:

how is it not a pointer??What you said above is that it SHOULD NOT SOLD AS a pointer but it ACTUALLY is a POINTER

Anything above 5 mW is a PORTABLE LASER, not a POINTER. a pointer is something used for POINTING, you aren't going to use a 200 mW for pointing. I'm going by what the fda says, what they are saying is that anything eyesafe (less than 5 mW) is a POINTER, and may be sold as such. Anything above that, must not be sold as a pointer, but something else (portable laser, etc...)

Besides, lets quit fighting and help this guy out.

Whatever,we the hobbyist use the term 'pointer' to the pen shaped lasers and other small lasers.
To the OP:for the price the laser is good,it should be outputting ~100mW but i suggest you to look for a focusable one such as THIS

I still think 200 mW is too powerful for his first. I assume this is his first, he isn't online so he can't tell us.
