12v 5v power supply

Just my luck...

where i work i come across a lot electrical stuff.. so i was digging through a shipment and i find a SOLA power supply. I'm like i just hit the jack pot, i found a psu for my scanner. But just my luck the 12v is only rated for .6amps. :yabbem: and it is a sealed/epoxied enclosure. i'm still going to try to mod it. i have some transformers that might work though. or i can over drive it and see what happens. i will have three lasers set to around 400ma.

Why don't you just use a standard PC power supply?
You have 3.3V, 5V, 12V, rated for around 15A (depending on model).
I can't imagine them to be a very "dirty" power supply, computers being
sensitive electronics as well.

If youre going for compact, then I might see your point, they would be overkill.

true^^^ but i can't figure out why everytime i start to use my psu for a laser it shuts off. then i have to unplug it to reset it... any advice? i have plenty of room for this.

Yeah that's a nice idea for a multi-purpose PSU, but in his case he wouldn't even
need to mod stuff like that. He should just wire it up permanently, or maybe
incorporate plugs in the wires (PSU-side already there) for easy servicing.

Hmmm, happens to me too sometimes, although I think it's my fault crossing
wires and making shorts. ;)
I guess it goes off to protect itself.
Comes back on all the time on request.
Maybe just try a different PSU? :D

i have my atx done almost exactly like that... i just am missing that resistor. i never knew that there had to be a constant load. so to mod mine will be super easy. i just have to pick up that resistor. im not gonna put an LED or power switch. and it already has external terminals mounted for all the different voltages and grounding.

funny behaviour of the PSU. :thinking:

Any tutorial can be used to diagnose a problem.

So stop whining like a b*tch, and move on.

Here's another hint: I have an 8 ohm, 20W resistor on all of mine.

None of them shut off.

OK I get it now: those PC PSUs don't like to be run without any load at all.
Just hook up something that draws current (resistor, lightbulb, etc.) to one of the +5V
and ground, and voila, it should stay on ;)

A 10ohm across 5V would only draw 2.5W and an 8ohm would only draw 3W. I'm not sure why they recommend a 10W rated resistor.

I run my flexdrive that I use for testing off my PC power supply all the time. I just leave the case off my running PC, and plug it into a convenient power connector when I need to use it (I have a female power connector attached to the flexdrive, with a switch in-line). It's always worked fine for me, and has never shut off the PC.

I have a boostdrive done up in the same way which also works nicely.
