I bought a used LPM from someone on this forum and I have to say, it's really easy to use. All you need is a 9V battery and a digital multimeter (DMM). If you're tooling around with lasers, odds are you have one (DMM) anyway. Although I bought mine from an individual, you can pick them up on EBAY for $25 - $30 + S&H.

If you're looking for an inexpensive way to check those lasers laying around (to 120 mW), this is the way to go.
