Have you looked at the DX 3405? It's a 3 battery host that is nice and roomy and jayrob makes a great heatsink for it.

They are the same size as AAA, though at a higher voltage. AAA's are 1.5v, 10440's are 3.6v.

That really depends on the driver; BUT, none of the drivers I've used will power anything when driven with 1.5v. So if I was going to bet money, I would bet against it.
