    Driver Purchasing Advice

As a noob who has not tested most of the drivers out there, I have tried a BlitzBuck and an X-Drive. My BlitzBuck was DOA. Seems that 2 pins on the chip with 6 pins were soldered together. Could have just been a freak manufacturer QC issue. After talking to the distributor, it turns out that...

Oops... how'd that fan get in there

+1 Thank you. Good job on the thoughtful build and a good read, love the idea of the thermal switch. It would save power for when the fan is not needed and act almost like a cycle timer as well. When the fan kicks off, you know you are back to cool again and can laze some more :)

    Test #1 Underdriven 9mm 445nm and Heat

Thanks :D That actually sounds like the perfect build for my son and I, to make his first laser. He turns 15 next month and has been bugging me about it. As soon as I wrap up these 2 or 3 builds, I'll grab a PL450B after all. :friend:

    Test #1 Underdriven 9mm 445nm and Heat

I'm sorry, you must have missed my other thread asking questions about this. I don't plan on running it at 300mA. At this point I am thinking of running it somewhere around 700mA-800mA to get a 1W output. This diode will reach a 1W out put with less effort or heat then a M140. My hope is to...

    Test #1 Underdriven 9mm 445nm and Heat

Good idea, but my geometry is lacking. it would take a mass of testing to find what works, and then to fit it into a host I can carry in my pocket? wew. I am not up for that level of a build yet. I dont see how on Earth I would run the PL405B @ 1w output stable, with passive cooling. It pops...

    Test #1 Underdriven 9mm 445nm and Heat

I's a start. Just looking to find a balance between heat and light. I am thankful for your help, and all of the other members input and direction. I wish every one shipped as fast as you and Jayrob. Thanks again!

    Test #1 Underdriven 9mm 445nm and Heat

First Tests. Purpose; 1. To find out the lowest operating power to fully illuminate the diode. 2. To test extreme low powerd heat. Notes; 1. My Laser Bee is still not here so I can only guess the output of the diode. 2. My 12mm drillbit is not here so this test was done with no heatsink but...

Underdriven 9mm 445nm for Continuous Duty Cycle

Do you have a pic available of your host/heatsink? @ 1.8A I think you will get around 2.1w-2.4w depending on your lens. Grrr I would love to get that with passive heatsinking, in a portable host, but I know it's impossible with the diodes we have. Fans have been suggested to me by a few...

    3.5W RickTrent 445nm C8 (PIC HEAVY)

About how much heat is generated at the low setting? With that XL heat sink do you even have a cycle time.? If you run it on high for your 30 second cycle and then set it on low, does it start to cool?

Underdriven 9mm 445nm for Continuous Duty Cycle

Was the beam divergence exaggerated or elongated due to the diode being underpowered? For 100mW you were pushing around 210mA to the diode correct? Any noticeable heat at all? What did you have it set in?

Underdriven 9mm 445nm for Continuous Duty Cycle

Another member PM'd me something along the same lines; he said "You won't want to drive a 9mm under 1.4A as the output profile is not all lit up till then which can make the beam look over elongated".

Underdriven 9mm 445nm for Continuous Duty Cycle

I have ordered a bunch of stuff, custom test/dummy load, fresh IR thermometer, a couple new tools, making a custom test heatsink, 2 of the 9mm 445nm diodes, 5 of the 650nm diodes to test the test gear with, 2 different test hosts, 3 different drivers, a 3 element, g-1, and g-2 type lenses, plan...

Underdriven 9mm 445nm for Continuous Duty Cycle

Will do. I started ordering parts for a 3w build, but the misses got wind if it and is riding me about it "your going to zap your arm off" kind of stuff. So I may put that together in secret and post results. As for the low power build I have only ordered the diode from DTR and a lense mod from...

Underdriven 9mm 445nm for Continuous Duty Cycle

Thank you. I did see that. I have looked at nearly every build on this forum as far back as 2009. I think that wannaburnstuff is correct. Medium sized host, good heatsink, less then 800mA with the 9mm diode, should net around 1w with continuous cycle times. Need to do more reading. Thanks for...

Underdriven 9mm 445nm for Continuous Duty Cycle

I'm getting from multiple sources that it cant be done, or at least with out active cooling, ie a fan. Yet wicked lasers run at 1+w with no fan and no cycle time. I don't think they do it with smaller diodes overdriven......still thinking that running a 3w diode around 1w (800mA-1,000mA) may be...

Underdriven 9mm 445nm for Continuous Duty Cycle

Thank you. PM sent. Im still searching for info and I will post if I find anything useful. Seems most of the members go for all out power in short bursts. I am appreciative of there efforts so everyone knows how far we can go and strive for more. It's just that sometimes you want something thats...

Underdriven 9mm 445nm for Continuous Duty Cycle

I have searched the threads but seem to be missing what I am looking for. I have found the test results of many members on how far these diodes will go. I have seem many 60 second duty cycle 3W threads. I am looking for informaition on running one of the 9mm diodes through an average sized...
