Created more transmission holograms last night. These are trivial to make, though the film expensive and the development process tedious. No lens apparatus required - any lens-less DVD diode will do. I wonder if this stuff is censored, as these holograms so lovely and easy to create -- despite...
Two laser bricks from my LG drive now. in addition to violet, red -

I'm guessing it's around 70-80mW. No LPM. In the 100mW ballpark.
It's a so-so burner as I could not get the diode centered...
This weekend I'm hoping to build another brick laser. This one, as my other recent attempt, from a failed DVD drive. The diode is from one of my two cheap Lenovo desktop computers. The tray on the internal optical drive began eject and close repeatedly. :)
I had to remove the drive and its been...
I tore apart my malfunctioning LG burner and created a weak BluRay pointer with it. See this topic for build details -

Here's a couple balloon pop videos. 10 feet appears to be the limit. Can't quite light a match, though...
I'm about to start, attempt, to create a pointer using the red diode from a LG burner.
This weekend I dismantled my LG drive and removed all three diodes (BluRay, DVD, CD). I completed a DIY build with the BluRay diode - see this topic for more...
My LG drive started burning coasters. So I dismantled it and extracted the diodes this evening. Time to build another violet laser pointer.
Here's the drive's box -
Diodes, left to right, I think, are: BluRay, Red (dvd), IR (cd)
Here's the 405nm ('BluRay') one, closeup, back -

It's now November, and getting cold and dark.. at least for those of us in the Northern hemisphere. This time of the year the light toys become more appealing. So I decided to put this video collection together.
Here's the laser, <= 100mW red pocket mini

Feeling a bit nostalgic today. It's been close six years now that I've been posting to laserpointerforums. I was looking at my HD today and noticed so many pictures of lasers. Decided to create an anthology of my many projects.
Prior to the mid to late 1990's lasers were rare and expensive...
100mW pocket mini, glass lens option. yes it can light a cigarette if perfectly focused. note i'm not a cigarette smoker, i wanted to see if this was possible.

i had to click a few times to get the laser to stay on - battery was nearly expired. it died shortly after shooting video...
Three more holograms. Have refined my workflow now, attaining satisfactory results.

Freshly cut lemons and apples. In the actual hologram they glisten and appear edible. -

Recently very impressive technology has been developed which enables the creation and synthetic holograms from 3D computer models.
Zebra Imaging can create large white light viewable full color holograms from CAD models
These videos are worth a look. They claim over 10 inches of height...

I'm addicted to making these holograms now! It's not difficult.
Here's a picture of my hologram exposure area:
Everything rests on a board with bubblewrap under it. I've propped my brick laser pointer on the pot and the uncollimated output illuminates the hologram microcosm. For these...
Last night I created my first transmission hologram of some marbles and other glass trinkets. The hologram film appears clear until shining an unfocused laser through it. You can see it's possible to adjust the focus at points within the hologram.

Here's my first successful hologram. This is a ~1 second exposure using ~75-100 mW DVD diode laser. Reflection hologram. I rested the film plate on top of some pocket change & items. Lens was removed from laser, which was located ~1 foot from film. The laser had been on for nearly 1/2 hour...
