Yes make sure it's in a decent heat sink. I normally start around 100mA which is pretty safe for modern DVD burner diodes and work up from there. Keep watching the heat and how much current its drawing. When you say one is half-round, is it a plastic or "flat" diode?

Depends on the size of the driver and the pill. I prefer round drivers because they fit in the pill, or micro size square ones that fit in the pill.

Nope, no way, it's just filtered flash lamp light. Although, Of interest you CAN make a KTP crystal lase with a flash lamp according to Sam's site! They did it by exciting a green laser pointer using a cheap camera flash. Unfortunately the crystal can shatter if you put too much power in it though.
