Hopefully someone who knows more about that specific diode can chime in. I tried finding the manufacturer so I could search for the data sheet but no luck. AFAIK that drive is a DVD ROM (reader only) and they use IR diodes. You could always extract the diode(s) and test them.

That laser diode is IR. You won't be able to see the beam and it's not very powerful at all.

I think a flex will work with a 12X. You just wont be able to drive it to the max.

I believe most here use Li Ions anyway. I do mostly because the hosts I like are usually 16340 or 18650 size.

In my experience it isn't a problem. Just makes sure it is packaged well to reduce any shipping damage. Don't send it with batteries in it, or in the same package for that matter. If you want to go to the extreme, you can mail the laser, and the tail cap separate but I've never done that.
