The microboost driver will work with a 445nm LD but the flexdrive is a better option IMO. Im on my phone right now so its difficult to post link but flaminpyro and dtr are both selling flexdrives.

Actually the LM317 can handle up to 1.5A but that's the max and would have to heatsinked. There are other LM series ICs that go to 3A and 5A (LM338 and LM350)

30AWG should be ok, just make sure its multi-stranded so its flexible. People use the wire from old computer mice cord and ethernet wire but the silcone wire sold by a couple of members is the best. You should use a 1W rated resisted on your test load, or two 1/2W in series.

If I know the LD is dead I just use a nail and hammer. Put the module in a vise and 1-2 taps on the nail sends it a flyin'.
