The XBOX 360 HD-DVD high power laser thread

I've put over 100 hours of use on my 803t "brick" laser.. this is at 100mA. http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1209940381/348 The diode appears quite stable at this power level. With the Meredith heat sink, Plus some 'additions' I've thermal glued to it (see image) this setup...

how long can you REALLY keep it on for?

Depends on the power level you run the diode @, as well as the size of your heat sink. The diode+heat sink combination will eventually reach thermal equilibrium. You probably want to keep this temperature < 50C.. Ideally <40C (body temperature). I'm running an 803t diode at 100mA, and with the...

Sun + Magnifying Glass = ?mw

There's a lot of energy in sunlight. Around 1000 watts per square meter on a bright day. Years ago Edmund scientific sold a a giant fresnel lens, over a couple feet square. It was sold as 'melting asphalt in seconds'. Unfortunately my parents banned the idea. :( I did find this one, 11"...

    bluray ant hunt

spiders are dangerous. what happens is their abdomen (thorax?) will first swell, and then sometimes explode, splattering you with steaming spider goo. at least i recall this happening when i was a kid and went on a spider extermination rampage with a magnifying glass and a lighter (to finish the...

    Would You Believe a 180mW Blu-Ray?

Wow! A factor of two difference in the power level between 7.5 and 12 volts. I would imagine the part with the higher voltage would have a significantly shorter life as tunneling and 'hole migration' would be much worse. .. just a guess tho. Isn't the optimal voltage on these things determined...

    MXDL 3x10440"Plug-n-Play DDL-driver" with PHR-803t

Re: MXDL 3x10440"Plug-n-Play DDL-driver" with PHR- Nice work! Curious, do you use any thermal paste between the back of the diode and the heatsink? For me the process of building these things is more than half the fun.

    PHR-803T batch testing.. Windowless 803Ts?

Thank you for posting those numbers. It looks like most of these diodes are good for 70-90mW @100mA. I don't consider the variance to be extreme. I know with lower power diodes that a factor of 2 difference between power levels at a given current is common. The emitting part of the diode (P/N...

    Couple stooopid "BluRay" videos

lol, I didn't notice the audio until after i posted. Balloon popped so fast it both scared and deafened me. High power blurays are mean.

The XBOX 360 HD-DVD high power laser thread

I had connected pins 2&3, so that wasn't the problem. Now that I think about it you're correct - it would seem the rheostat's internal resistance has been increasing. Ug. Annoying. So I got out the soldering iron and my trusty old analog multimeter. I bypassed the pot. Using a fixed 14 ohms of...

Retard Police officer shines 30mW laser in my eye.

Re: Retard Police officer shines 30mW laser in my This entire thing sounds so stooopid. I have trouble believing your account. You say you 'accidentally' grazed someone ~100 yards away and they called the police (??). More likely you were closer and not accidentally harassing them. WTF were...

    Couple stooopid "BluRay" videos

Hope everyone out there has been able to get a few of the 803t 405nm diodes. These are proving to be rather amazing for the price. Apparently they're good for 100++ mW (some people are getting closer to 200mW). To purchase an individual 405nm diode at these power levels (100+ mW) will probably...

The XBOX 360 HD-DVD high power laser thread

Thanks for the advice. It was something I wasn't aware of. I can imagine a little drift in the rheostat's resistance, but it's drifted a lot (assuming this is the problem). My initial marking on the pot drove the LD at 82.5mA.. when I checked last night, after 35 hours use, I was only getting...

The XBOX 360 HD-DVD high power laser thread

No I never measured the resistance. You may be correct about the rheostat. However it's a large 3 watt rheostat - I should hope it can handle the current w/out oxidation. I'll measure current use after another 50-100 hours. It runs noticeably warmer @100 mA , compared to 90.

The XBOX 360 HD-DVD high power laser thread

Well, 90mA does seem to be a sane and reasonable current to run the 803t diode at. I put over 35 hours of use on my brick pointer, using 90mA (on page 30 of this thread:http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1209940381/348). At 90mA my setup can be left on indefinitely - no duty...

    blu-ray burning

hmm, I just turned up the current on my 803t based pointer from 90 to 100 mA, and it made a very noticeable difference in how well it can burn. I do need to focus it, but it will ignite unsharpied wooden safety matches up close. I'm using the Meredith glass lens. This video shows is igniting...

120 mw Blu-Ray DX laser Pointer

I should hope he'd offer to make it right. I mean.. $700.00 ?! Damn That's a lot of cake for a few minutes of 405nm goodness

    tightly compact blu-ray optics?

If there was such a substance I'd be on it :o Talk about a trip, there's so much RF radiation around us lots of stuff would be glowing. Wonder what you'd see?

    Would You Believe a 180mW Blu-Ray?

190mA? Thanks for taking one 'for the team'. My opinion is you'll be lucky to see over 10 hours use from the diode, but what the f*ck do I know. Nice build BTW. If you're not able to get a 100% duty cycle from a direct injection diode (not DPSS) it's a poor design, IMO. Let me qualify that by...

    tightly compact blu-ray optics?

Sure. Most of the electromagnetic spectrum is completely invisible. Your eyes are only sensitive to a tiny slice of it.

    tightly compact blu-ray optics?

I agree with the other posters - the thickness of the beam is some sort of optical illusion. I think it's a combination of not being able to focus on it well, increased scattering at this wavelength (see:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rayleigh_scattering), as well as some of these diodes having a...
