To me 445 looks indigo blue heading toward violet at powers of less than 50mw, especially at low mw powers; 5mw or less looks almost violet. At higher powers of 100mw plus it looks much more like clear sky royal blue.

The easiest method by far is a paring knife, press the knife in the hole at a grazing angle to cut the plastic to the outer threaded part than peel it out. 99% of the time it goes smoothly and leaves a nice clean aperature. FWIW I noticed the 405nm glass lenses were full of dust inside too.

You can cool a 633nm red with LN2 and get an output of about 610nm which is really orange. I also have a multimode 612nm orange diode that needs -45 deg C to operate properly. Good luck getting a usable beam though. red plus DPSS green is the cheapest and easiest method though.

Don't know about brighter, but definitely prettier. 514 is a nice emerald green, 510nm will be just a tad bluer, and when balenced with 445 blue and 660nm red you will have a crazy color gamut that mixed gas lasers would envy. If only they could make tiny beam sizes to fit tiny galvo mirrors...

This seems to be a major problem with these diodes. Tiny motes of dust get on the window and it fries so bad that the window actually melts- the only real cure is decanning it.
