Worth a look for those interested in laser diodes. They state the importance of keeping the diode as cool as possible - heatsinking - for a long life:

Approximately 4x power is required to appear 2x (twice) as bright. Nonlinear response of the eye and all that. 200mW will not appear much more then twice as bright as 30mW.

Build is not very aesthetic, however appropriate, functional - for 1/2 watt of extremely bright red! Unfortunate these diodes are not single mode, the spot is huge.

I agree. It's a harsh color. The reality is it's a blacklight laser. The violet color is on the periphery of what the eye is sensitive to. The violet color, especially at high powers, aggravates my old eyes. However I've got a couple 405nm (DIYs) for the sake of the collection. And they do burn.

I see there's no additional news of substance regarding these lovely laser diodes. I must a bit more critical. The diodes shown here are boutique items. The manufacturer and cost are not mentioned - not a good thing. It's safe to assume they are very expensive. The biggest problem with these...

It's good to see such news, however this remains a unique laboratory item. They also don't discuss the efficiency, which seems to be a big problem with the green laser diodes currently available, at exorbitant prices..

Beautiful!! I've a weakness for the very small laser pointers, which are nonetheless very powerful. A fun gadget to showoff to friends. My two favorite light toys below: pocket mini red, and muyshondt aeon flashlight. Both easily pocketable.

Brilliant pictures. That much copper is overkill, the entire rig can't be dropping more than 5-10 watts. It's not going to hurt anything however. My retina quivers at the thought of >1 watt at that freq. You'd need to wear arc welding glasses to use that laser, even casually. Pointer look...

They are transmission holograms, which, fortunately or unfortunately, are lit from the front. At least the way I'm doing it, staring towards the laser. You can attain much more depth this way compared to the reflection holograms, although a laser is required to reveal the image. It's interesting...

It surprised me. That hologram is the best of the bunch, although it doesn't appear so in the videos. I'd read holograms of certain objects, including food, were difficult. Never know until you try.

Where's the hologram?! The regulator sounds good, however I don't think a 9 volt battery is what you want. 150mA is asking a lot from a 9V, and the runtime and stability will not be good. The exposure switch is a bad idea. You want the laser to be warmed up. Turning it on and off makes it less...
