    DIY Radiography

Hey all! I finally placed a notch in my belt that has been more than a decade in the making! Full write up can be found here and is worth a read if you're interested in the technical aspects. Link -> Sigurthr Enterprises: Portable DIY X-Ray Source & Radiography I'll save casual onlookers the...

    Mobile forum view

Yeah in the latest iOS update there's no more option to load desktop version. I really, really hate the LPF mobile site, with a passion.

Japan/Australia members-backpacking to you. Places to see things to do?

You should see if you can go visit Fiddy. His house is basically a giant collection of awesome stuff. I think you'd really dig what he has going on.

    Thermite

Copper is going to react faster and more violently than Iron, just the way it goes. I've only done small batches of an ounce or so so far. If I ever have the cash to devote to it again I'm going big; 15lbs of mix. It really isn't expensive for that, I just hardly ever have $50 I can quite...

    Thermite

Very nice! We you going for an overly oxidized reaction? Heh. Stoichiometric ratio is somewhere around 3:1 oxidizer to fuel. I actually almost spent my xmas money on some thermite supplies but decided to put it towards something more permanent; finishing my radiography unit.

Suggestions on variable DC power supplies/oscilloscope discussion.

Since it hasn't been said before: be VERY careful when scoping mains powered equipment because if you connect HOT anything to the ground on a scope probe you will have a very expensive repair or replacement on your hands. A variac does NOT isolate the mains, it is a simple autotransformer and...

    Wow, all that glass..... beautiful!

SGTC (Spark gap tesla coil) help needed.

I think the single biggest improvement you'll find will be in the matter of tuning. You've got what most would call a "junk pile flyback TC". Correct me if I'm wrong: -You didn't calculate resonant frequency (aka. "f0") of the secondary, which means you didn't select the capacitance value of...

    The Tarantula. {Now updated with The Horsehead}

Re: The Tarantula. Awesome shot! I want lens info though XD. Yeah looks like true colors too.

    Windows 10 , Have you?

Sounds like a corrupted user setting. Have you tried logging on your admin account, making a new account, setting the new account to have full admin rights, and then testing the new account? That's the usual workaround. The "solution" is a full reinstall. IIRC it comes out from a corruption...

Unless you want the RMS value of a discontinuous or non-sine signal. =P

What is a quality beginners camera for photoshop use?

Lots of good posts in here and you've already picked so I'll just comment generally. I'm an Olympus man, absolutely love the features of their modern MILC cameras. As such, I have 2.0 crop factor cameras, which are smaller and lighter than traditional DSLRs, but larger than compact P&S...

    Tesla Coil Build Thread

Re: Arduino; easy as pie, really. You pick up an Arduino board, install the drivers and IDE (operating) program on any windows pc, I email you the code, you copy paste it into the IDE, plug in the Arduino to usb, hit upload, done. Then it's just a matter of attaching two 25k pots, a resistor...

    Tesla Coil Build Thread

After many, many questions answered in PMs, I'm starting a new Q&A Section so more than just the person asking the question can benefit from the info. I won't be posting anything the authors haven't ok'd, so don't worry about privacy issues when you write me. Anyway, let's start this off...

Suggestions on variable DC power supplies/oscilloscope discussion.

Yep, I wouldn't regret the 54z really. You're leagues above and beyond competition... and the rest of us on old analog clunkers. The price is only user friendliness, and that you can overcome with dedication*. *occasional fits of frustration may occur. ymmv.

    Windows 10 , Have you?

Finally encountered a compatibility bug; Wife's new PC has a Nvidia GTX 950 GPU, which has a BSOD issue on Win10 for almost all of the recent drivers. Luckily, the second to last driver release seems to be working fine, but other users of the this GPU report needing to go back as far as version...

putting together a gamma spectrometer (using soft MCA)

I think you misread what I wrote and missed out on the explanation; the gamma energy determines the pulse height electrically of the pulse generated in the scint probe. Anyway, see...

putting together a gamma spectrometer (using soft MCA)

Hey Paul, In most scintillator materials there is a correspondence between pulse intensity and wavelength, as such in the PMTs used there is a correlation between pulse height and detected wavelength. By sorting counted pulses by pulse characteristics they're able to generate a graphical...
