    ☢ My Radioactive collections ☢

Re H3; you can't measure the betas (at least I can't, and most others can't), but you can detect the bremsstrahlung if you have a low energy sensitive detector. OP: nice collection. Nothing particularly hot here folks, so don't worry about exposure rates.

    ooh, very fancy! More pics!

How would you react if the reputation system is removed on LPF?

Voted dissatisfied by use lpf the same. It serves a purpose that is hard to accomplish through other means, I.E. touched on this and I agree. Yeah, it is the subject of drama from time to time, but it helps clean up the member base a bit since in a way it prevents problem people from blending...

    Tesla Coil Build Thread

I got some more work in today on my big coil's rebuild. This was towards the end of the session, but the bridge and controller are finished now. I just need to make up the LV transformer's power cable and make/attach the resonator's primary. Also, this happened:

    Incredible Photo.

Seriously stunning. That is gorgeous! I wonder how much time he spent trying to get such a shot at location, these are those "chasing the dragon" type shots.

    LPS SOX Sodium Lamps

So that's what real bayonet sockets look like! XD

    LPS SOX Sodium Lamps

Wow, all on magnetics? That's impressive! I've got only modern solid state ballasts that aren't intended for LPS, heh. They work well but it's a matter of finding the perfect ballast for the job when there's no specs to go off of mostly.

    Ozone Generator Finished

@Pman ionizers are intended to charge particulate matter in the air so they coalesce together and stick to surfaces, removing the particulates from the air. Ionizers have a byproduct of small amounts of Ozone and Nitrogen Oxides because the high electric field gradient at the emitter(s) also...

    LPS SOX Sodium Lamps

@555 That is one gorgeous lineup! I still only have my 55W and 18W, but LPS is very expensive to acquire here in the states. @Blarg these are low pressure sodium, not high pressure, but yes the conversion to modern lighting isn't well received by everyone, despite the media clamoring. I worry...

    Ozone Generator Finished

You misread what I wrote. The ozone doesn't obstruct the alphas, I was describing the operation of the Am241 detectors. Smoke obstructs the alphas causing a lower level of channel ionization. If the channel ionized more than normal because of the presence of O3 and singlet O, it takes more smoke...

    Ozone Generator Finished

Most of the common detectors use an Americium plated pellet to ionize an air channel between to electrodes. When smoke particulates enter the channel they obstruct the alpha particles from the Am241 and lower the ionization level of the air channel, causing less current to flow through the...

    Ozone Generator Finished

Kill you? Nah. Definitely strong enough to damage some of your respiratory tissues though. That is interesting to know. The data I found via google said 10ppb was the average lower limit for detection, so if both are correct that means some people have adverse reactions at half the...

putting together a gamma spectrometer (using soft MCA)

Ahh I gotcha now Paul. I had a feeling you weren't wrong in what you were saying but you were saying it incorrectly, thus giving the wrong impression. No worries. As with S_L I've never heard of that term (radiation toxicity) being used in the field (I don't have as much official experience as...

putting together a gamma spectrometer (using soft MCA)

Aye S_L, in the first part of his post I thought he wrote toxic instead of radioactive since the second half counters the first half. Yeah... Thallium... that's an element I won't go near. Not even for scint probes, no thank you. Like many I used to "play" with various heavy metals as a kid...

    Ozone Generator Finished

Here ya go! I didn't test it out for obvious reasons, but it passes the compiler checks no problem and I didn't change any actual functionality (just made it so two variables don't overflow for such long time scales) so it should be fine. /* Ped's Ozone Timer * Written by Matt "Sigurthr"...

    Ozone Generator Finished

The MQ-131 (craptastic ozone) or the MQ-3 (superb VOC/alcohol & pseudo ozone/UV)? I recommend the MQ-3 highly, and it's only a couple quid from china via ebay. The 131 was ~20 quid and I still feel ripped off lol. The 131 is supposedly sensitive to halogens too, and I might give it a go with CL2...

putting together a gamma spectrometer (using soft MCA)

Well yeah, lol. I wouldn't go licking it, haha. Definitely spot on with the salts though. There's a reason I wanted a nondispersable ingot and not the nitrate or oxide which is easy to come by.

    LaserLands 445/450nm 5mw - Replacement DEFECTIVE!

Re: LaserLands 445/450nm 5mw Ebay Order When laserlands was new, their 450nm low power pens were around 45mW, just FYI. Don't expect this one to be 5mW, but there's a decent chance it may be 450nm.

    DIY Radiography

I've had my eye out, but up here in the frozen wastelands there's nary a hint of wildlife right now, living or dead. I don't remember if I wrote about it here or on 4HV (looks like just 4HV) but I'm working on upgrading the HVDC supply too. I did some initial experimentation with a tertiary...

LPM Inquiry (0.1 or 0.5 mW measurements?)

There's a commercial pen-stick LPM that has that range and sensitivity, I can't remember the name now. I think it may have been from SpectraPhysics.
