Max input voltage would be 6.4V (2x LiFePO4 at full charged = 3.2V*, for example ANR26650M1B cell)
Max output voltage (Vf) would be 6V
Above that? kaboom! :D

Except if you meant by drowning is just by molding it into some container, then i agree with that having an inefficient thermal conduction.

I ran it continuously without heatsink at 2.4A
The heat generated is "pretty normal" "touchable by hand"
At 2A output, it just felt warm.
In conclusion, 2.4A without heatsink is fine i think.
Minimum current would be about 1.1A-1.3A depends on the tolerance of each potentiometer :D
New driver available:
This is a generic 5A current regulated laser diode buck driver
Topology: Buck (When operating, Vin must be above Vout/diode Vf)
Vin: 5 - 18V (tested up to ~19.5V input)
Vout: 2.5 - 8V (tested up to ~13V output)
Iout: 1.1A - 5.2A+...
Those bump at the beginning of soft start is either the characteristic of the regulator, or it's from the startup of current sensor (current sensor is not working if Vout below 2.5V)
