    I went ahead and graphed the data you took. Seems like the "safe" current is somewhere in the yellow zone, maximum 250mA or so. The efficiency slope changes at 136mA and again at 258mA. I'll probably run mine around 50mW/160mA, should be plenty of power to go with my red and blue diodes :)

    Same deal, focus it down to about a 1mm spot or so, and blow on it lightly and periodically once it starts glowing orange.

    Have you tried blowing on it lightly, like kindling a fire (because, really, you are). Works pretty well for me, though I can only light a few materials (cardboard, candle wicks, and maybe a couple others).

    red diode on sf-aw210 sled

    I was referring to the 650nm. I run the SF-AW210 405nm at around 130-150mA. I don't remember since it's been almost a year, but I'm pretty sure I just used a pair of pliers and a vice to break the heatsink. It's a brittle alloy of aluminum and magnesium, most likely.

    4 W 450 nm laser diodes + 750 mW single-mode variants!

    I really hope some company finds a use for these and we find a source for them. I'm still waiting for direct green diodes, but I'd love a 750mW single-mode blue; the "dot" on my 445 is pretty useless at >5 feet away.
