As a hobbyist, I have scratch built many gas lasers over the years. The CO2 laser is much more forgiving than other gas lasers. It only requires a modest level vacuum, power supply can be very simple AC or DC, and optical alignment has a very large margin for error... A CO2 laser will produce significant output even with poorly aligned cavity mirrors. While a perfect gas mixture will enhance output, there is a large window of ratios that will lase. Even leaks in the gas system will not stop it from working.
For any laser hobbyist interested in gas lasers this is a must do project. For professional use, however, off-the-shelf, hard sealed tubes have become dirt cheap, reliable, and readily available.
