Ebay cheapie China pointer power measurements:

I purchased three sets of RGB (blue really 405 nm violet) pointers and measured the following output powers:

650 nm Red: 6, 8, 9 mw

532 nm Green, 14, 40, 74 mw (74 mw green was about 20 mw of infrared, so really about 54 mw of green. These DPSS pointers were not very stable, the power varied up and down 25% of these values, to the full peak power shown here).

405 nm violet, 25, 49, 52 mw.

Measured using a Coherent LPM (smaller thermopile in photo) and a Thorlabs power meter for the lower power pointers.

Another set of these cheap laser pointer pens arrived and were measured as following:

650 nm Red: 8.5, 11, 11.5 mw

532 nm Green: 17, 25, 32 mw (these DPSS pointers were not very stable, the power varied up and down from 2/3 of these values, to the full peak power shown here).

405 nm violet: 32, 50, 54 mw

Huh?? Still on the weaker side compared to pens sold years ago and surprised they are all close in power and no powerful odd ball that sticks out..
Have you taken any apart to see if there is a pot on the driver? I doubt it though as no pen iv'e gotten since I started this forum has one.
Only some oldies from Pman that he made focusable had a pot and not the green ones where he swapped in a Fasttech module.

The last batch had one at close to 75 mw, but 20 mw of that number was infrared, so did not contribute to the visible beam. This order did not have a higher power DPSS 532 nm pointer, all ho-hum amounts of green power to me, but the red and violet pens were about the same. I have not tried to open them to see if there is a pot or not. Regardless, these are very cheap pointers and for this price, nice.

Oh yup no doubt they are a great deal..:)
Even though the red's are a little more than 5mw, I would feel "ok" playing with using it as a cat toy.
Have you measured them with different batterys or with one 10440 and a spacer?

I haven't purchased any of these pens in several years. I got interested in getting some multi-line 532nm ones last time I did. Ended up with a 4 line and a 6 line one. Those are still my favorites. If you have a diffraction grating, Chris, you might want to check yours for extra lines.

Techhood, excepted my bid of $46 for a 488 labby with cooling a couple days ago..
Hoping the 60mw claim is close??:)

I hope it is actually 488nm. They use the Sharp 490nm diodes which can be anywhere from 487nm to 493nm. I seriously doubt they measure them for wavelength before selling them.

Paul, a nice spectrometer is still on my list to get, one of the things I'd love to have. I could put something together with what I already have, but I really like the ones lasertack.com is offering.

GSS, I had a bunch of newly purchased AAA batteries, on your suggestion, tried a second set of extra batteries I had in another pack, don't see any real difference either way. I do not have any other small batteries here I can try. All of these measurements were made with new out of the pack batteries both times.

I wasn't sure to just how much green tint I would see but i'm really happy with color the Sharp 488 that Rich built for me in a host.
I can't notice and see the green but I also didn't compare it to a 450nm on one end and a 505nm on the other side.. I'm sure by comparison there will be a hint of green though.
Hoping Techhoods aren't somewhat rejected diodes but like you said I doubt they tested them.

488nm for $47 dollars from Techhood.
Does a stable 68-69mw's.. Only issue is the fan dosen't work but i'll get the fan running when I have time.
Again loving this color.. Not much of a box reflection either, but i'll eventually pop the front cover off to see if I can get an idea of what lens is there??

Ten 532 nm AAA pointer pens:

Measured powers: 54, 50, 70, 6, 50, 40, 43, 23, 46, 34. Fairly stable power outputs except for two of them. About 15-18 percent of the power output was invisible infrared instead of green.

That 6mw one is a keeper. Seriously!!
I'm curious if these are the style of pens that have the long black plastic lens and the module has the aluminum sleeve thats pressed into the host?

Yup, thats the style I was asking about.. ;)
I always thought they were the weaker modules but RedC had that same type in a few Military hosts that did well into the 100mw's.
Can you get a measurment of the base screw of that black plastic lens? I want to know if it's any where near the standard 9mm lens barrels we have now. Curious to see if there's a way to use it on a 488 diode to tame the box reflection??
