Would like to get all this info into one thread. Will update this post as soon as you posted the infos you collected :)

Well, FWIW, I think IgorT was one of the first to build a class IV laser; not sure if he was the first.

With regards to custom hosts? I think the Kryton was the first to actually have a lot made and have significant adoption.

I remember when 589nm first started to trickle in, but I don't remember who got one first.

Hemlock_Mike once accidentally drove a 12X diode over 1W for a little bit. Probably a couple years ago.

The rest... either it was before my time or I have no idea.

It'd be nice to have something in this thread. Would also be nice to see where it goes.

Would the Dorcy Jr be the first widely used host?
When did Ehgemus start cranking out custom hosts? Might be worthwhile to consider his work.

Dorcy Jr was probably the first widely used host, yes, but it wasn't custom made. I believe Kenom was the first to (at least commercially) make the first custom host.

According to Dave the Kryton Smooth was the first host designed & made on LPF (by Kenom)

This is the first model Kryton. Originally, it was just the Kryton, until Kenom designed the Groove model.
Then we had to come up with a different name ;)

IIRC, the Smooths were the first manufactured "run" of hosts designed by someone from the forum

I may be wrong, but I have reasons to believe that "Stephanie" from the Wicked Lasers forum was the first person to make a DIY laser from a DVD burner.

Can you share a link / quote?

I think this is her website. At least she's the first person I've seen extract laser diodes from DVD burners.
