Re: Host Design Contest

I have several ideas, and I went to open up my 3D CAD program to draw it up, only for it to tell me the libraries are all missing....idk where the s$#@ they went -_-
So I have to re-download a bunch of crap, but I do, I will most likely be submitting something :)

Re: Host Design Contest

The machinist who has made pretty much all of my hosts is Ehgemus, so probably him. Although I am certainly open to other machinists.

Oh I just wanted to know if I start drawing up something for you, how much "room to manouver" do I have, so to speak.

Re: Host Design Contest

I was thinking a host that incorporated a focus adapter that had a drop down design, that while flowing with the lines of the host, would also allow you to focus the laser without having to go to the front of the aperture, but down toward the middle by the front of the battery tube. Hard to explain. Better get to sketching!

Re: Host Design Contest

I know what you mean, I have a ton of sketches of similar ideas hanging out here. It is just a matter of making sure the machining is spot on. I have also considered incorporating a non moving focus adapter. I figure if the focus adapter is held to the body of the host, then as you turn it the lens will have to screw itself in and out of the lens tube/focus adapter based on simple laws of physics(if we make sure the lens is always threaded onto the inside of the diode module as well as the focus adapter). It would be difficult to do but would make for a constantly flush design that would be more aesthetically pleasing. However I haven't figured out the best way to go about it. Yet.

Re: Host Design Contest

Heres one way to do that:

say you have a one inch diameter tube, 1 inch long, threaded on the inside. Then you get a 1 inch threaded section (with hole on the middle for lens, or what have you), threaded on the outside. On the top of this section, there are two holes. Make a focus adapter with corresponding holes, epoxy pins in that are long enough to insert into the inner section (lens holder section). No, you just have to hold the focus adapter onto the host with say, a screw-on bezel ring or something similar (like how machinists on the forums will make heatsinks that have a sort of protuding ring around the top, o you can screw on a retaining ring to the top of the host and hold it in place).

Then boom. Turn the focus adapter, lens holder section turns on the inside of the section and follows its threads, but your adapter stays in place.

Re: Host Design Contest

Are you looking for a conceptual design only or are you more looking for drawings complete with build to dimensions?

Re: Host Design Contest

I am just looking for a sweet host I can have built sometime. If it is a very complex host then dimensions are necessary, atleast a general idea of it. If not just let me know battery configuration and driver setup.

Re: Host Design Contest

Tell you what, I have this OLD designs from a while back. I never got around to actually doing it because, well, you see...

Let me know if you like it, so I know should I be moving the designs forward from "just a concept" that it is now.

I do like it, the side button on that is a cool feature! Dunno how difficult it would be to have made

Well to somebody with all the proper tools and machines, not even that hard I'd guess. And I can't imagine anybody charging over $200 for it, which is your budget currently, right?

It's smaller than the 3D render makes it looks like, it's for 1x 18650 cell.

Here is my first idea It is a slim and slick style host. In a few hours hopefully I can finish my other two: the glowstick and the blackwolf

Here is the "Glowstick" a host with GITD in mind
Here are the front side and back views. I'll save the best for tomorrow...

Those are both sweet designs they look very doable; I think the hardest part to duplicate is going to be the square/diamond shapes.
It looks like there are 4 facets to each one, IMO very hard to machine that pattern,
unless you have a type of knurling/embossing tool for the lathe.

I personally think those hosts would be perfect for the new 520nm 1W diodes! :)
I second wannaburnstuff's like of the side clicky, can't beat em.

Go for it! :D
