I wouldn't suggest tearing open ANY Li-Ion cells. Do you know what happens when you do it wrong? They combust into flames or they explode. Li-Ion batteries get their power from a "divided chemical reaction" for lack of better terms. When you crack it open or even cut it for that matter, you are adjusting the chemical process and risking an explosion. The reason we say not to buy cheap cells is they are already at a HIGHER risk of this explosion WITHOUT even tampering with them. Why add the risk of tearing them apart? Its your hands, eyes and life so you can do what you want but don't come back here and complain if you got burned or bodily damage from opening them up.

I PROMISE you, you wont get any sympathy from us and most likely will get flamed like crazy since you have been warned

BTW the shipping ban of Li-Ion has been on and off for the past year. They figure out one way to send them and then the shippers would shut that down, find a new way, shut down. They cause too many fires on flights, thus causing planes to crash.

Hey thanks for the warning on opening a battery. I didn't know they are that potentially dangerous just buy tearing them apart. I'll see if I can figure out a safe method before I do this or not do it at all. Again Thanks for the heads up

I have one of those blue generic 18650 battery of a brand called "JWS" 3500mA, and one ultraFIRE 3700mA blue too, it works, but I'm really scared now to use then.

I'll search for reputable batteries here in Brazil, don't wanna pass this risk.
I will buy a quality charger too.

MisterGordan, notice how they have different button tops......sight right there that they arent even all the same cells.

BTW you can tear the wrapper off without any issues but once you cut or break into the metal housing is when it gets dangerous. There are plenty of videos on YouTube of Li-Ion cells exploding or combusting.

I had a 10440 that died on me, wouldnt go past ~2v, so i tore it apart- i had thick gloves and eye protection on, mind you, and the battery was dead, so i figured i was pretty safe against any chemicals. Lo and behold, it was a legitimate cell! Now, i'm sure it wasnt up to spec, but still. I guess its harder/more expensive to fit a dummy cell inside a 10mm diameter tube than it is to just make an actual battery.

You are most likely to find fake cells in the 18650 size. 16340, 10440 or even 22650 cells area lot harder to find recelled batteries. They exist but not common like the 18650

Lmao!!!! You know a less " experienced" person would have just called it coke. Your keen eye saw otherwise ;)
that looks more like coke than crack. crack is yellowish and in rock form NOT powder !!

Thanks for reply.
Did a "hobby charger" is expensive ?
Where can i buy name brand stuff from trusted sellers ?

Thanks :)

Gordon;

I have a quality two-cell "analysing charger" available for $36.95 . . .

with shipping prepaid in continental U.S.

It will test cell for actual capacity, and for internal resistance.

1st Red Link in signature.

Just adding to the warnings - I had an UltraFire garbage battery explode a few months ago. It randomly started to emit smoke while charging, so I instinctively ran, grabbed it, and threw it outside. Within seconds it had melted the large amount of snow around it, and would likely have caused a fire if not for that snow.

havent heard of any troubles from crap batteries for a little while now, but here we go again,
did you examine the battery afterwards? i wonder if it was a smaller cell in a 18650 again?

There aren't as many complaints about them because people realize they are crap and avoid them now

Unfortunately I did not examine it, because it was a major fire hazard. I suspect it probably would be a smaller cell, however.

This morning I went to charge my 18650 batteries and one wouldn't take charge.
After reading this thread again I decided to open it up and found this !
Needless to say I'll be replacing them with quality brand names.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Andrew
