Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a 24V power supply to power DT30 galvos and also my projector set up. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good 24V power supply?

What are the specs for your specific Galvos and controller ???
That is what will decide which PS you should be looking for..

You will also need to know the additional specs of your "projector
setup".

Thanks Jerry,

Well I need a PS with +24V 0V and -24V (DT-30 scanner). I will also use the +24V and 0V for powering the lasers which should not exceed 5A total including the galvos. I can only seem to find +24V and 0V power supplies on ebay... Do you know where I can get a power supply with dual polarity?

1A DT-30 Scanner
1A M-140 Blue
1A Green Module (Overkill), probably around 0.6A or 0.7A
0.25A Mits 110mW
0.4A LPC-826
1A Fan (Not sure how many fans I'll use but I'm pretty sure it wont draw 1A)

So... 5A should be more than enough.

Unfortunately dual rail power supplies like that are very difficult to find. what you can do, though, is get 2x24V power supplies with isolated grounds/negatives, and connect them in a differential configuration.

So... I can get 2 24V power supply, connect the +/- between them and use the remaining + for the +24V and the - for the -24V? Should I, say, get 2x 5A 24V then? Also, how do I make sure they have isolated grounds? Also, can I connect the 2 power supplies in parallel or do I need 2 different plugs?

I believe they can source any of Meanwell's power supplies, and I believe meanwell do make a +/-24V supply, so try that first.


If not, get 2 power supplies, yes, and connect the + output of one to the - of the other. The + of the one you connected to is your + rail, the point where you connected the + to - is the GND/common, and the - of the other supply is the - rail. Like this:

Ground isolated means that the - output of the power supplies aren't connected to ground anywhere, they are floating. If they are connected to ground, then feeding the +24V of the other PSU into it wouldn't work and probably damage the PSU's.

The seller should know if they are or not.

If I'm using 2 power supplies can I get ones that are rated say, for 3A instead of 5A and distribute the loads or do I need 5A for both?

Yes, you can distribute the loads. Just connect more devices between GND/common and the -24V rail, using the GND/common as +. Then you can use between +24V and the GND/common too. Alternatively between +24 and -24V for 48V, but not much really runs on that voltage in a scanner apart from the scanners themselves.

I'm using P3 drivers to have analog control of the lasers. If I use both the -24V/0V and 0V/24V would it have any effect on the control? I need to modulate the ground and the +M for the P3 driver. Would it be ok if I just use a 1A power supply and a 5A one and put all the load on the 5A? Or would that not work?

Yes, you should be able to use 2 different current PSUs if the only thin sharing both is your scanners.

As for the flexmods, I'd be careful as their modulation could be grounded somewhere along the line. You'd probably be safer purchasing a seperate PSU for your lasers, and just running aux stuff like fans from the other one. But I haven't tried it myself, so I can't give definite info sorry.

I was only worried if I used both 24V-0V and 0V--24V since there would be a 24V difference in the ground. However, I think I'll just use 2 different power supplies, one 5A and one 1A and only use the 1A one for the galvos. The rest of the things will be run from the 5A one and they should all have the same ground.

How many diodes are you running with your P3 if you don't mind my asking?
