Possible New Driver?

Hey everyone - I have a possible new driver... but before I start making/selling them, I would need to know if they would sell.

The specs we are looking at are:

- Double-sided board, ~4mm in height
- Rectangular, 15mm x 9mm in size
- Boost, switching regulator
- Operates off of 3V or higher (perfect for li-ion batteries)
- Common ground operation, i.e. only three connections necessary (VOUT+, VIN+, ground which comes from either case pin or host)

Price would probably be pretty low, certainly not more than $20. Is this desirable?

Absolutely. How much current could they supply before heating up too much? And have you made a prototype or anything?

I have yet to make prototypes (it would be expensive to start prototyping), so this is just a feeler. But they should be able to supply full 1A current without heating up nearly continuously... and if it does heat up (will be found out easily after prototyping begins if it does), there is a large IC to be heatsinked easily :p

Don't think I'm ragging on you with these comments - But I've found that these types of threads are next to useless. Scratch that, they basically ARE useless.

Almost any new driver design will get interest, and especially so for a boost or buck. The challenge is that this really doesn't mean anything. Interest does not equal commitment to buy. Stuff changes quickly in this community. When you're this far away from a tangible product, it's actually worse to do an interest-poll (in my opinion).

If you're sitting, with a working version of the driver in hand, and you need to know how many PCBs to order from Dorkbot, and how many parts to press "buy" on from Digikey, then I can see some value in a quick "Hey guys, here's the driver, how many people are interested in buying one at the X dollar price point?" thread.

But at this stage, you have to know that any boost/buck initiative will get interest. Nobody can give you the sort of information about sales that you might want right now, so it really only hurts to ask.

Well, that's good to know then :D After I am done playing with the boards I am working on in the next week or so, I just need to work out some practicality kinks and then these will be ready to go!
