OPEN SOURCE: CC-Boost RC1:

For the current RC1 version of this driver, see post #133 here:

-----------------------------------
PREVIOUS (outdated) OP CONTENT BELOW
-----------------------------------
This arises out of a thread that was started here:
http://laserpointerforums.com/f67/o...current-boost-driver-starting-work-88682.html.
To keep things clean, and avoid confusion based on some of the earlier discussions, it's new thread time. This boost driver is tested and working. It boosts to 2.4A from a single li-ion cell, and actually runs fine for a bit without any heatsinking. It runs a 9mm diode without issue (see video). That's an 1100 mAh 18500 IMR cell in the clip.

Here's what's cool about this driver:
- Tiny, the smallest version right now is 10 x 10 mm. That's a smaller footprint than a flexdrive.
- Inexpensive. The parts are under $5.
- Minimal part count. 2 ICs, 2 caps, 3 resistors, and an inductor.
- It can do 2.4A without issue.
- Oh, and it's Open Source

I've attached Eagle schematics and board designs for two versions, a 12x12 and a 10x10 board. I prefer the 12x12 because it's easier to reflow.

These are released to the world. I'm not making or selling any of these, I'm just sharing the design. If you want to say thanks, you can donate BTC, but it's not necessary:

Some housekeeping matters - somebody should scope these. Wolfman has mentioned using the ZXCT1009 and having concerns about startup overshoot. Somebody should confirm that the same issue doesn't arise with this driver.

Re: OPEN SOURCE: New Boost Drive, 2.4A capable from one cell, tested and working

rhd,is this the same driver you sent to me? I didn't think it was because that driver didn't conduct until it had an input of ~9 VDC. If it is, I am concerned with the lack of conduction at 4 VDC. If not, excuse my question. :)

I sent you a buck driver for testing. Much different driver. It was perhaps 4x the sq mm footprint of this guy (maybe more!)

Yeah, that's what I thought after looking at it again. The two ICs kind of gave it away, too. Is your boost driver working out to be all that you were hoping for? ;)

If you've got a blank PCB you could send me I can get it scoped quickly :)

How about I just send you a working driver? PM me your address, and I'll pop it in the mail :)

WOW thats tiny. Thanks for another awesome community contribution, RHD! I would rep you if i could :)

I wish I could order the parts and make one or two, but i don't own or have access to a reflow station :( I would happily rather put together drivers for 5-6$ than pay 20-30$ for the equivalent of the same thing from that certain person who makes drivers...and sands off the name on the IC's so no one can make it themselves...

EDIT: so if you want to make a few, i would happily buy them!

Sounds good to me! Saves me from doing a digikey order, thanks! :)

Re: OPEN SOURCE: New Boost Drive, 2.4A capable from one cell, tested and working

one of the vets that can make these should and sell them for 9-10 bucks a pop and make a fortune.. be nice to find some small drivers 1-500 mw for reds -1-1w for green and blue in that price range and would not kill the bank. Nice driver though be a while before i can start buying parts again (sigh) have a interview on wends but if it less than I made farming i dont think i can take it because of the commute any enough with that thanks for the contribution to the LPF

Re: OPEN SOURCE: New Boost Drive, 2.4A capable from one cell, tested and working

rhd, awesome work. +1

If someone could make a batch (50-100) of these and sell these for $8-9 while giving some $$ to rhd for each driver sold, that would work out for all of us.

I'm excited to see the test results.

Actually, i will extend my offer- if anyone is planning on making a few of these, i would like to buy a few. Just cant justify spending the money on a rework station just for drivers for myself.

I just finished finals, so if there is enough demand I can do a quick batch of 100.

Me too. And no money needed. I'm happy just to have a bitcoin address in this thread for donations, and if nothing ever comes in, I'm cool with that too.

You don't need a rework station. Toaster oven works ;)

I'd count on the fact that a couple more revisions may be needed. I took the design as far as I could without a scope, but there may be need for tweaking based on what ARG finds out through scoping. If the scoping reveals anything undesirable, we can all brainstorm on a fix :)

How much would one cost?
