How to test a C-mount Red diode?

My stubby laser is LEDed since the first time I turned it on, but I'm not sure what is broken, the diode or the driver.
I have no instruments here, but I have a friend that has a big laboratory with all the instruments needed.
I think it is more than enough to have a power supply with a fine regulation of voltage and current.
I need to know some specs:

- The voltage needed;
- The current needed;
- How I must measure to know if the diode is working or not;
- If I can do the test in a short time without any heatsink.

Any help is really appreciated.
