Im trying to get a handle on driver design and stumbled on this link that made some things clearer to me. Maybe it might be useful to someone else?

Laser Diode Driver Basics

That appears to be an APC Driver, we generally don't use them in the hobbyist pointer-centric community. The only reason to use APC (auto power (output) control) is when your amplitude must stay absolutely rock solid regardless of temperature or power fluctuations. If you were modulating your laser for data transmission (not AM modulation of course) or making sure output stays at a certain precise level, say 5mW, it would be a decent driver to use.
