Today I tested some 650nm and 445nm diodes with Groove 2, and DrLava's V5 but i forgot to change setting on my DC power supply since i switched from Groove 2 driver. So setting was still at 8V ! I completely forgot that V5 manual states that it should not get more than 5.8V input. Thats what happens when you don't build lasers for 18 months :)))

Now before i realized my mistake i spent good 25 min on/off testing the 445nm diode setting them between 1000mA to 1400mA without any problem or over heating!! Thats 5-10 sec duty cycles which i plan to practice with pen size "laser technology demonstrators" as i call them.

Since i'm building pen host laser, I wanted to see the current difference at the diode, or any change when i connecting two 10440 batteries (AAA 4V each) in series instead of my bench adjustable DC power supply. To my surprise, i was getting the exact same current draw at the diode (i had my multimeter in line constantly monitoring current) and these two little AAA sized 500mAh batteries in series were able to give me 1W of 445nm light through plastic lens for 10sec at the time.

When i turned it off, i touched the driver, and it was barely worm ??? ( although i only touched top side where the pot is.)

Only later i realized i was feeding Micro Flex DriveV5 with 8 volts all the time, and it survived. Not only that, but two 10440 batteries gave me over 1400mA output at diode at short duty cycle, but for quite some time.

any thoughts?

I realize that higher input voltage such as 8V can mean less work for driver at higher current settings as voltage across diode is over 6V then. So possibly this explains lack of heat generated on the driver itself.

I am thinking to do this again, and confirm all of the above, and actually build a pen size 1+Watt laser.

Do you think V5 can handle it?
