Cutting an AMC7135 driver to fit aixiz module

Hello,

I'm wondering about how can I cut this driver to make it fit aixiz module.

I've seen before here on LPF a member that has done it but i can't find it anymore.

If i cut it on the red lines, will it work?

Follow the metallic traces on the PCB to see if any important ones get cut like that. If it's only chopping connections to the landing pads for other AMC7135 chips you should be fine.

The massive gap in that heat sink hurts my eyes It's really a shame they aren't made better.

If you're running this at a high power consider getting a 12mm CNC rod holder for the module, they work so much better for heat sinking

Looks like it should be fine if you cut it, just make sure you're not cutting off the via that transfers the power to the top of the board.

Well, I'm thinking about filling the extra space on the heatsink with some thermal grease (or paste, I don't know how it's called).

Do you think it will work?

It will work fine cut at the red line.

Make sure the black wire going to the diode is connected to the 7135 terminal.

The thermal conductivity of thermal grease/epoxy is negligible in comparison to metals like Al, Cu or Ag. Thermal compound is still much better than air, which is why its used, but your best bet is to limit the free space around the module by having the smallest gap possible. :beer:

Yeah, I used a bare chip for a red build I did a while ago. My first laser diode build, actually. I arranged the wires in such a way that I could solder the bare IC's legs to the correct leads without getting anything twisted up. I added a bit of solid-core copper wire to the solder tab for some extra thermal mass and stuffed it all into the back of the aixiz module.

If you will be locating the IC far from the chip, i.e. more than a few inches away, datasheets say to use caps. If you keep your distance between LD and IC down, the IC is all you need.
