anything special about laser drivers?

Aside from compact size fitable in a laser pointer housing, is there anything else in a "laser driver" that I need for which i can't use a general purpose adjustable current and voltage regulator like this one?

In my experience, the current regulation on those is inadequate for laser driving, as it takes several hundred milliseconds for the constant current to kick in - and it operates in CV until then.
