Mainly just cause it's an HID. It's only a 10W HID, but 10W HID!

Also, I can't seem to find a lot of info on it, perhaps I'm not searching properly. I wonder what the distant lux this thing is capable of. I don't know the arc size of this light, but I'd bet it's smaller than the surface area of an LED

If the same standard of .25 lumens is applied, you can work it backwards. It's pretty impressive for 2010. The retail price on it... :eek:

Beam: Adjustable 6°-19° - Now the question is whether they are referring to the hotspot or the total output of the light - the spill included. If it's just for the hotspot, it still makes for a decent thrower. It it's just for the output spill included, that would be very interesting.

Nice, thanks for the links!

So, looks like it uses an Ushio M10N001, which I believe has arc gap of ~1.2mm. So, nice focusability at least. Dunno what a 168A battery is, but from what I gather, may just be another name for 18650 protected cell.

Dunno what's bigger, 1.2mm arc, or the image of a flat LED die as viewed from an angle that a reflector would couple to it. I'm gonna guess that they're about equal.

But yeah, I think the biggest appeal for this light was when it was released. Back then, this was one of the best solutions for a portable spotlight of sorts.

I'm not sure what the 168A battery is either. Searched briefly, and all came up with is, that it's supposed to be charged to 4.2v. So even if it's a slightly different size, probably easy enough to find other fitting batteries.

I'm kind of amazed at the prices I'm seeing for it. Basically $350 and UP.

Kind of tempting, and in throw, 365 meters is really not something to dismiss even now.

I spent a good 20 minutes with this light in my cart, and with one click left to check out.

After much agonizing I didn't.

The price is fantastic. The light is a collector item, and it was the, or near the peak of flashlights in 2010. In 2010, this would have been a no brainer. Even now it's really enticing, and I'm hoping someone takes it soon.

Still. It is 2013. and just about any larger reflector 2x18650 will beat it for output, throw, durability, and of course there is no warm up.

That said. Someone buy it please, so I don't :eek:

That's weird my light has an OP reflector. The description says smooth reflector.

Just ordered two Sipik sk98's for fathers day since they are so dang cheap (one for me!) 1000 Lm. on 1 18650! @ $12

1000 lumens with direct drive? Maybe half of that, then it starts dropping further. You're not getting a buck/boost in there for $12; that's for sure. When I get cheap lights, I purposely choose one that isn't 3xAAA or 1xlithium so I know it will have at least some regulation in it. If it's in the <$20 range, 2xlithium or 1xalkaline for me thanks.

For a flashaholic... nah not crazy. I'd say medium severity of addiction. Probably not a good thing I know what almost all of them are off hand :tinfoil:

Pretty sure the driver is a linear, as there is no inductor on the board and its of a very simple design. The LED's only take around 3.5 V too, so shouldnt be a problem.

The current with a full bat is exactly 2 A. This was tested by desoldering one of the wires on the star and completing the circuit through my DMM with some very short and heavy duty leads. I also havent noticed the light dimming as the battery discharges either, but when my 18650 next gets low on power Ill check the driver to see what its outputting.
