I've been wanting some of these for a long time, and now I'm starting to see "purple" LED Christmas lights for sale. Does anyone know if they're UV LEDs?

As far as efficacy goes, it's unlikely UV because it's so dim. It's probably a blue die with some red phosphor.

Yeah I would also say its a blue die since they're so commonly used in shorter wavelengths LEDs, and also white LEDs.

Is that graph the spectral output of this type of LED? Is this design commonly used for purple LEDs?

I have a couple 5mm UV leds, they produce a very rich dark violet color, not really good for viewing as decoration.

I'm pretty sure it is. That's the spectrum of a pink LED that google found. Purple would just be less phosphor.
