I've got a AAA minimag (that's right, not even the AA minimag).

I modded it with an XP-G and LEDil lisa.

It's really just for the lolz. I mean, AAA minimag putting out 100-200 lumens? It's just funny.

Those mini mags are overrated indeed. Plenty of keychain led lights will outshine them at less then half of their size and cost.

An interestign condiseration could be battery life and availability though. Some half-watt 3-AA(A) lights can be very useful on the road, despite their performace is poor for their size. If you find yourself in a power outage in some odd country, its very nice to have something that runs on commonly available batteries, and has a longer lifetime rather than maximum light output.

The light I keep in my car is a 2xAA 1W LED flashlight. It's plenty bright for an emergency and the batteries will last a while.

Okay so im not going to make a light out if the mini mag. Turning it into a laser some day.

I want tips for complete builds or kits! About same size as the minimag but putting out like 400 lumen :)

What a coincidence! I just put this together today! With all the parts my total cost was about $20! and it puts out about 300-400 lumens! It's just a little thicker than the mini mag is all.

I started reading up on CPF and I can't even think of anything besides this light:


It's 69.50 free shipping on batteryjunction and I am 100 percent ordering it next week. I just love the idea of infinitely variable output from the control ring. They also have an xm-l version that puts out ~1-460 lumens on a 16340 battery. I'm not saying buy it, everyone's needs/wants are different. But check out reviews for these and other lights on CPF as well.

I have cheaper flashlights from DX too, of course, but I prefer my light I carry every day to be one of much better quality. Make sure and check out video reviews of lights on youtube from goingprepared (from GoingGear.com). He is an awesome video flashlight reviewer who is very easy to listen to.

Oh those are nice! If I'm not mistaken, that uses some sort of foam that, as it gets compressed, its resistance is reduced. Either way that's awesome!

Not sure about foam lol... Pretty sure it uses lubed o-rings to turn the magnetic control ring.

Oh, well thats neat. My buddy was telling me about some flashlights that as you rotate and screw them on, a foam is compressed which lessens its resistance and allows more current to flow or something.

Oh ok, lol. These either just have o-rings and lube, or just specialized thick grease, but no foam whatsoever. CPF had some pictures of someone doing an emitter swap on one, but it didn't go into huge detail of the control ring, but you could tell there wasn't foam.
