Handheld strobe light, suggestions...

My mate commissioned me to build one. It seemed a lot easier in my mind..lol.. The hardest part is finding a good bulb, if possible, I'd like it not to be just a bunch of LED lights. I found this on ebay 75W STROBE FLASH MODELING LIGHT REPLACEMENT BULB D3H (eBay item 130424871237 end time 23-May-11 12:02:36 AEST) : Cameras
Bought one as a starting point.
Any suggestions? There's few tutorials on the net, which is making it harder.

Also, if anyone knows how one would mod a driver/make a driver that just has the flashing strobe setting, would be helpful... Or any info on the subject really..

A lot of LED flashlights have a strobe function, though it is usually not very high frequency, and not tunable.

The bulb you bought is a halogen, will not strobe.

Perhaps find a flashlight you like, that has different modes including strobe, and runs off of batteries you can easily find. That way, if your friend doesn't like the strobe function, they either have a flashlight, or you have a flashlight.

What if you bought one of those strobe DIY electronics kits and put the guts into a big flashlight, like a cheap plastic spotlight? Not saying this will be easy, or even a good idea, but just throwing ideas.

First, strobo (xenon) bulbs have a phisical limit (usually, between 30 and 50 Hz, the common ones, and there are some very special ones that can do 200Hz and more, but i suspect you don't want to give over-500 $ to Hamamatsu for one of them :p) ..... also, overheating can blow or make explode them, in extreme cases (i'm speaking for personal experience )

At the actual there are some very good white LEDs that can be used in place of a strobo lamp, for this purpose, driving them with a power mosfet ..... for "small" applications, you can try this one (but there are also 30 and 50W ones, if you can power them with higher voltages).

Yeah, Shananhan, I have a driver and the case from these real cheap flashlights I've been using from dx for lasers, which is probably guna end up being the go, 3 settings, one being the stobe one.

I think that I'll use one a those LEDs, too^
Won't be doing much till I get paid next week, though... Car rego is putting my balance at about 20 bucks for the next 5 days..lol..

Thanks for the help, guys.

Ok... I have a 10w LED and a driver but the only problem is it doesn't have the strobe setting... Does anyone know a way to mod it, maybe? Or ideas on a separate driver for the strob to use with it, if that would even work. :|
That's the driver I have.
