Today i received two 30W LEDs in the mail, so it is time to start testing and building :D

I was thinking about doing a flashlight this time around, the last LED project i did (baseball cap light) had no focusing of the beam so it lit up only 100m or so.

Do you know any places to buy good flashlight reflectors i could put in front of these so i can get the beam focused?

If i cannot find a good setup for the flashlight i will make another baseball cap light, this time around a whoppin' 4800 Lumens strong :tinfoil:

The LEDs attached to an Intel cooler. Perfect size for a flashlight, ok for a baseball cap. Lets see where this project goes from here.. :)

If you really think you can collect and direct all that light with a homemade aluminum funnel reflector, you're out of your mind. Those massive emitters will require a DEEP parabolic disc with a square base.

Time to do some googling...

I'm curious to see what you come up with!

aspheric or fresnel lens will make 2 hotspots (or more, depending on focus)

I say find some cheap source of reflectors you can scavenge. The smaller the emitting area, the easier it is to collimate into a parallel beam. Our laser diodes have a microscopic emission area. LEDs' emitting areas are easily visible with the eye, and in the case of these LEDs, the area is the yellow phosphor coating. Unfortunately, to focus a larger emitting area, one must use much larger reflectors.

I say keep it a optic-less light or experiment with cheap/free reflectors to see what you are working with.

Finished for now. With this configuration it has ON/OFF/FLASH switch in front of the handle and 30/60W switch integrated in the handle.

Currently the LEDs are running at ~1.25A when nominal current is 1.5 - 1.8A. I did not have suitable resistors to easily bump it higher, will fix it when i wind my own resistors or if i feel lazy i might visit ebay.

The heatsink could easily handle a 100W LED, the only problem is that all emitters over 30W seem to be 32V. Do you know 100W LED emitters <22V or some easy way to bump 22V to 32V? :D

Thats a lot of lumens :)

I guess the downside is that its basically a 180 degree light this way, and you'd need a very peculiar reflector to make a usable beam out of 2 leds set up like those.

As for boosting the voltage higher, perhaps you can post the schematic of the driver you are using at the moment so we can see if there is room for modifcation to higher voltages.

I'm assuming you've somehow broken out the charging port for the LiPo battery? Or built the charger right in?

I'm always a bit cautious when it comes to building lithium batteries into something permanently, i'd hate to see it go up in a fireball!

Yeah it is not a spotlight :D The LEDs produce a cone 140 degrees wide.

Things:
No, actually you can see the charging port in the second side picture. You can charge it while its in there or take it out for safe charging in a lipo safe bag. I installed the fingers screws on the lipo mounting bracket so no tools are necessary to take it out.

That is a vari cool build. push/pull fans, nice beefy heatsink, and I really like the secured but easily removable lipo bracket.

I bet you can probably run that thing at 100% at a 100% duty cycle with those fans and heatsink!

You might consider getting some different LEDs. If you can get your hands on it, a couple of sst90s or a handful of xm-l LEDs will give you quite a bit of output from an LED that can be more easily used with reflectors.

Given proper cooling, you could probably get almost 1000 lumens per xm-l.

You could get ~2250lm from a single sst90.

Hey ,


Nice Build , really like the self containd Battery/driver/fans all in one case , i was plaing the same thing but as otheres have said , getting a reflector to work is hard i managed to use a fairly small one on my led , just about works still a flood though :p

Yeah it does not even get warm to touch with that heatsinking :p

The SST90 seems to be really neat but the price is way too much. These current ones cost less than half an euro per W, including P&P, and have slightly better lumens/watt than sst90.

The xm-l i could not find prices for, but i guess it is also way beyond the price of 0.5/W

Yeah, I think they are about the same as the sst90.

~$7 + shipping from Cutter, while the highest flux bins are another $2 more.

I think a reflector could be found at an electrical supply retailer. Ceiling fixtures have reflectors that could focus both of those offset LEDs.
