Damn boscoj, u beat me to it. i'm converting some pc heat sinks into 445 labby's right now. But your heatsink is a beast. Looks like something outta the Large Hadron Collider.

Plan is to cut along the black line on the backside of the sink and pare it down until it fits into a d cell Mag Lite host . . . we'll see about that . . .

Not to steal your thread here boscoj, but I was thinking of building a bit on your design for this laser. I've got a massive copper heatsink/fan from my old PC build, stuck with the stock cooler that shipped with my i7-860 for my current box, and the fan comes off easily after removing all of 2 screws.

Newegg.com - ZALMAN CNPS7700-CU 120mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan

Any bets on whether this would work for active cooling in a lab setup? Pretty sure I can tuck the wiring out of the way and fit the fan back on it. I could probably use the mounting bracket it came with to stick it on the side of a case, this thing doesn't sit on its side.

thanks cd520 . . . welcome . . .

and an update on the ebay 920 heatsinks . . . I just bought 6 of them and they are not the same as mine. The copper core is 28 mm wide and 35.5 mm tall whereas my core i7 920 was about 30 mm wide by 30 mm tall . . .

Not exactly what I was looking for . . .

So if anyone wants 5 of these I have them, got 3 days to return them . . .

The one on the right is more narrow and longer, 35.5 mm . . . also you can see the one on the right has more aluminum surrounding the copper core . . .

Must be an early design change . . .

Kinda bummed actually, my early i7 sink was a perfect 30x30 copper core . . .

these new ones are 28x35 . . . not ideal . . .
