Why aren't they low power 445 pens. Can I make one

I have a question that has been on my mind for a while.

Everyone seems to be making Class IV monsters that will blind you if you shine it at a white wall.

But why hasn't anyone made 5, 10 or 50mW 445 lasers. Lasers you can just point around (outside of course and not at anyone)

If I saw a 20mW 445 on sale I'd buy it in a heart beat.

I just think 1000mW is too much power for anyone to have. Sure 50mW will burn your eyes in a millisecond but it just doesn't have the same calibre of risk although its still extremely dangerous

Now this leads me to my next question. Can I build a 20mW 445?

You can easily adjust a Laser Diode Driver to output
less current and in turn the Laser Diode will output
less Laser Power...
The lowest that I was able to adjust a 445nm Laser
and still have it lasing was just over 7mW...

Most members here want their cannons to shoot the
cannon ball as far as possible... but there is no law that
says you can't put 1/5 the powder in your cannon to make
it shoot a shorter distance...;)

I like the look of the pen style 445 build. I might make one sometime since they seem novel and it will be a good first build.

I am constantly trying to get people to realize that the "usefulness" of a 1.2W cannon is VERY limited. It is dangerous and not really much fun indoors. Outdoor use is severely restricted in most places.

You can have a 1.2W canon that you use for 60 seconds at a time every once in awhile or you can have a 200mW tool that can be used just about anywhere. The life of the batteries is significantly lengthened and the stress on the diode is lessened at the lower power as well.

My most used 445nm laser is a 200mW pointer. I use it almost every day. I use it for target hunting, star pointing, pointing in the field, and to show others what the 445nm color looks like. If I want to burn something with blue, I pull out a 550mW laser.

I have a 1.8W, 445nm laser. It sits in the safe with the batteries removed :shhh:

Unfortunately, this hobby is filled with young men who are worried about the length of their johnson. Since whipping out their johnsons would be too embarrassing, they whip out their 1.2W cannon instead :tinfoil:

very true more power output doen not mean more fun ,,,i have many differnt lasers but the one i use the most is a 30mw 532nm survival laser with a whistle on one side and the laser on the other side ,,its only about 4 inches long and runs on one AAAA battery,,i carry it with me all the time ,,,use it to point things out when i'm backpacking or on a hunting trip

This is why 3-mode lasers are so great... My powerlight builds are 200mW low mode
5-600mW med pulse and <1.3W in high mode.

The smaller pens I did with the 10440 also ran along the same lines of
output with the option to swap out the 3.6v Li-ion for an alkaline 1.5v
and in low mode go down to 5-30mW depending on the condition
of the battery...

We arent all whipping out our johnsons :D

^^^Funny you should say that. I've found myself using the low mode of the powerlight much more often than I use all my other 445's combined.

That might change now that I have a 400mW 445.

The 1W+ lasers just aren't very use friendly.

Unfortunately it's the nature of learning with experience. Time and experience are required:undecided:

My every day carry is a 3 mode with a 10440.. It is almost always used
in low mode at 200mW and have gotten far more use out of it than any
other laser.. Being able to jump to a 1W+ is a bonus, but having the lower
power is an excellent option.

I have been doing tests on my 3.5W monster recently, and having a laser in
your hands of that kind of output for me means goggles on before the key
even gets anywhere near the tailcap..

There is certainly a lot more freedom in the lower power lasers. Still dangerous
I may add, but a hell of a lot safer than 1W+

Wish I could rep you Dave, but I am quoting for truth. I'm finding this out after getting my first 1.2W 445nm monster. It's much too powerful indoors and can't be used outdoors.

One of my favorite lasers is a 220mW red pocket mini. Just the right power to be interesting without being painful. Of course it's still handled carefully. I also enjoy my 210mW 405nm, and use it more than my cannon.

As for the OP - if there was a 5mw 445 in this form factor I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I'm finding even the Class IIIa lasers to still be quite interesting and worthwhile. Picked up a Core in Glenn's recent group buy and love it!
