I never understood why people would open up other peoples' packages and manhandle their things. I know my parents wouldn't even open the box, but just gave it to me to open.

Then I have my teacher order something for me through eBay (way back when I didn't have a CC), some large rare earth magnets that I thought were the coolest thing back then, and what does he do? He lets his students mess with it. I think it damaged the surface, but hell, it could've broken their bones or been a real problem. Aaaand of course, why the hell is he letting someone else play with something purchased for another person?

Good luck with your diode. I had thought I had burnt out mine before I got a chance to use it, after finding I had done something wrong with my driver. In the end, I saw a beautiful blue light, and all was well.

Something to try before you try cleaning the diode: see if it's actually covered with oil. The windows on the diodes are inset, so unless they were really grabbing that thing it might've been spared. Most handheld digital cameras will have a macro mode that you can use to peer really close up. Hell, you can use a webcam even, if you can focus it. The window may not even be touched.
