How much would a fully built laser with a diode, host and driver cost?

Diode: 40-50
Host: 10-100
Driver: 1-40

+Labour, shipping, fees etc.

You do the math

at first, YOU must know what you want. especially what host (that's the expensive part) - I'd suggest jayrob's kits
also if you build it on your own "from scratch" it's a lot cheaper than using kit or having it assembled by other member

I'm planing my first build too. First with some cheaper diode, like 200mw red .. then 1W 445nm. Diodes seems to be easy to obtain here or elsewhere.

It seems MicroFlexDrive V5 seems to be good driver for both.

But now .. what battery is the best ? I mean cheap and appropriate for 1W laser ? That will lead to host selection, there seems to be lot of options. But it also seems at least for some of them some modifications are required, like lathing a heat sink fitting the diode. I can't do that. So I need host specific for the diode, right ?
How about lens ? Are they host specific or diode specific (other then coating, I'm aware of that) ? What about the switch ? Is it part of the host ?

Would be nice to create some 'forum approved' design for 1W 445.

Edit: This seems to be good start ! http://laserpointerforums.com/f64/fs-18650-build-kit-easy-assembly-445nm-blu-ray-red-43857.html

There are many approved kit's for the 445 diode, here's a few.

And a new one about to come out called the C3SS, there are more just ask me.

Nice work !
But as I said .. I can't machine any pieces. I need something what jayrob offers it seems. He will sell you almost whole laser ! Or do you sell too ?

Edit: yeah, sure he sells them, cleared via PM.

then you add the cost of a glass lens , ez focus adapter ,copper or silver hs then tritium vials.... and end up with a 1000$ bill.

Mine did cost more than a spartan 1w... and it need to be repaired.

i oredered a replacement switch from dx

flaminpyro sells kits like Jayrob, not sure about a driver though.

You must be kidding $1000.00 Huh I'll do you one for half of that !
as a matter of fact I think you need a real mans laser and I'll do it for 1/3 of that and put 3 iceblue trit's in the custom focus ring @ 120 deg apart and a 445 diode @ 750mW in a C3SS host :D
