Hey LPF!!!

So im looking to start with my first build, after a 3w LED flashlight i have, lost its LED to heat :(

I want to repurpose this host for my build.

This host takes 2*18650 LiIon batteries, so (if i understand correctly) i can build a nice 445nm Laser (im hoping to hit 2w, but 1.5 would be acceptable)

I was thinking of using the following parts:

Diode/module: https://sites.google.com/site/dtrlpf/home/diodes/445-m140-didoes (i believe these can be driven to 2w?)

Driver:Survival Laser Driver (at 1.8A or 1.5A)
Or
Survival Laser Driver (which is better/rec?)

Pill and ring: (assuming i cant use the existing one)
Driver Pill & Brass Ring (my current pill is +-28mm Outer diameter[thread] 32mm[head], 20mm inner diameter, and 28mm tall)

Heatsink: will have to be custom made, unless theres one with an outer diameter of 32mm and no taller than 17mm (this is why i might need a shorter pill)

Host: Chinese 3w LED flash light host (says ABC-Q5 300w on the side) takes 2*18650, see pics attached

If anyone has some recommendations for me i would appreciate the help!

Regards,
Joshua (aka a noob)

Hey man, looks all right so far. Few things:

If you can take the pill out, all you need to do to re-purpose the pill is rip everything out of the pill without breaking the driver. Then take all of the components off the driver, and solder a wire through to the large middle pad. That will be your + wire. Then, wedge a wire in between the board and the pill as you replace it into the pill. That will be your - or Ground.

As for your module choice, you will need one of the last two options. The host takes two 18650, so you need any option with the x-drive attached.

Also, if you want to replace the pill, you can't just buy ANY pill. The one u linked is for a C6 host, which is not even close to yours. This is why u probably need to use the existing pill. You could sent the pill to the guy who is making your heatsink, and he could drill it out for you to make it easier.

Hope this stuff helps

Hi Matt,

thanks for your reply, sorry to take so long to get back to you!

How big of a heatsink do i need for this diode? I would like to get a single piece pill and heatsink machined as space upfront (assuming i keep the camo covers to make it look nice) is limited on this host. is this possible? i think a single solid block would dissipate heat quicker than having a separate heatsink?

The other option is to go for crazy duty cycles (like my 200mw greenie at upto 5 mins before it gets slightly warm) and ignore the camo print and get a huge heatsink machined....

I should have the cash for the build soon, so need to start planning

Single piece heatsinks/pills are great.

The heat sink should be as big as it can be while still looking nice :)

Personally, I don't like that host :p

Are you sure that takes two 18650? and not just 1? It looks exactly like the UltraFire 903/CREE Q5, I have one and it takes one 18650. I guess maybe they also made a longer one that takes two 18650. Anyway good luck making that laser, that will make a good host.
