To get one of these lasers with a civilized output for those of us who collect colors? I'm thinking 15-20 mW? Every single thing I've found in the last hour and a half of searching has been folks focusing on wringing everything they can out of these lasers; I'm more worried about having a 2 x AAA pen host that will last forever with a nice tight beam.

Is the lasing threshold on these LOW enough to accomplish that? I have no need for a 1W laser.... lol

What actually is your question.... and what Laser Diode in
particular are you aiming at...

I believe at 200mA (the lasing threshold) they're single mode. Single mode to ~50mW, but they get so hot it's hard to keep there. CNI has the fat CR2 pens <5mW with 1.5mRad divergence listed, no idea on the price though.

Edit: Or just get a custom build and use an ND filter.

Any of the 445nm diodes.

Didn't realize that CNI had these. The smallest I found was the GLP-III-A host I believe. I'll look again, thanks. If I can get one from them, I'll probably go after one in one of Glenn's GB's.

After you guys fried the bejeezus out of your diodes at >2amps, since they started requiring more amperage to produce less watts, did the overall minimum power output drop too? perhaps abused diodes could have a second life as gimpy 5mw power hogging pens.

If one actually uses it as a "pointer" heat should not be an issue. Intermittent, short runs are not going to cause a significant build-up of heat.

Running one of these at <50mW should be very doable. I have one running at 100mW without any problems. If I can get an extra diode freed up, I could build a lower powered one as a "proof" , but it will be sometime next week at the earliest.

Peace,
dave
