osram pl450b in aurora ss host

gotta love a single mode diode. but this osram diode seems to straddle the fence to me since it's unfocused output looks bar-like.

after a couple months of inactivity in the hobby (other than frantic selling) i looked thru what i had and found i had a great set of parts for a single mode blue. i like the ss-032 aurora stainless host and had 2! after sanding about .003' from a gold plated copper heatsink from a gb i had a complete host. then there was an unused mircro boost drive i found. and lastly, a pl450b diode from another gb.

i was troubled about the microboost. with my soldering skills the only bridge i could make was the setting giving 390 - 750ma. thanks to blord's work i saw that this setting would be on the high end of what this diode has been pushed to. once connected to my test load and turned all the way down the driver was putting out 360ma.

there was plenty of room in the pill for the driver and luckily i had to press the diode module (copper) into the heatsink, it was that tight. i say luck because the sink did come with set screws, but with no slot or allen hole to tighten it with.

i've run this laser for 3 minutes and it barely gets warm, and is incredibly stable. even at such a high current the spot shows no degradation, but is nice and "clean" as the pics show.
the laser is powered by a single 18650 battery and the lpm and other pics were made with a 3 element 405 lens.

It is unbelievable how hard the PL450 diode can be overdriven. The stock output is 80mW and at triple nominal power it is still looking good.

thanks isaac, it's my favorite handheld. i got lucky with this build. there are no artifacts at all in the spot, it's incredibly clean.
