I got a blank lens holder from Jayrob and put the 9mm lens in it but its still JUST too far away from the diode to focus to infinity when screwed all the way home. It has about a 1" to 1-1/2" dot at 20 feet. I reckon another half a mm would do it :(

I'm thinking of chamfering or dremel-ing the last couple of threads off the lens holder so the lens gets closer to the diode. I have a tap on order but the threads look pretty well cut right to the bottom. (I ebayed one as they were $60 locally! - none of the tool supply shops locally stock them and they are special order).

Just to mention a couple of things about this...

It also depends on the module. If the module is too long, then it could prevent the lens from getting focus.

There is more involved than just the lens:

* Module length
* Diode length
* Depth of press, etc...

These new 9mm diodes are taller than a 5.6mm diode.

The 9mm module that I have made, is sized so that any lens will get focus with a 'flush' pressed diode.

But it is specifically sized for my 405-G-1 lens assembly with the AixiZ focus ring. An AixiZ 3 element lens will get focus as well, but stick out a little more just like in other situations.

Also, many people don't seem to realize that there are differences in the way a lens is mounted inside the lens nut. Which makes a difference as well...

I just ordered another from DTR, hopefully I get a real nice one. :san: Going to put this in my ultra rare purple 2C mag that is slotted for ice blue trits, with a pair of IMR 18650 cells, and a P3 driver. I am going to see how it responds to 1.8a current and depending on my power reading at that current I should be able to tell how efficient the diode is. If it looks promising I really want to hit 3w. I didn't buy this 3.5w laserbee II for nothing!

Do you have a focus adaptor attached?

Just an update to that thread I am no longer using the black bottom mounted lens barrels due to their incompatibility with the 9mm diodes.:D With the custom machined brass lens barrels I am now using with the G-2's they mount the lens pretty much the same way as the G-1 and it also has an enlarged entry aperature as well. These new ones work great with the 9mm diodes and they also can use the full spring from the Aixiz module to keep them tight.:beer:

It is all packed up ready to go out tomorrow. Good luck.:)

Well these have changed! What a waste in my sig. will have to pull that one out to see if it hits 3W. My 2nd wont hit 2W. sits at 1900-2000mw ish. 3W out of one of these would be nice..

ok may I try another? Could be the barrels I baught I guess. got them from dave Aus.. they are a bit short and I havent checked the aperature. One of my diodes is in an RHD Mod9 aluminum and one is in the long copper one ya gave me for nada... Here is the first one you sold me Still a virgin I guess.. 800mw 9mm 445 in a RHD MOD9 a pollished stainless auraura sh-032 667ma benboost

Does the lens look dirty or did you try one of the chemical methods to remove the glue?

As with just about anything with diodes there is a luck of the draw aspect and we can only post the observations that we have made but that is no guarantee that you will experience the same with every one. There are variations on all lenses including the G-1/2's from lens to lens. You may have received a very good G-2 and a mediocre 9mm stock lens or there may be something on the lens or something may even happened during extraction. What are the readings you are seeing with the two lenses? Also are you allowing a proper cool down period between tests so they are both starting with the unit @ the same temp?

Nope it looked clean and I just put them in the new barrels when they got here.

and Yes I agree. All the luck of the draw.. I know the one wont put out more than 2W Could be damaged I guess I am going to pull out the aurara one and see what we can make it do. 667ma for a 4.5V Is disrespectfull to this diode.

I'm going to be completeing my build today as well.

On test this 9mm diode 1900mW @ 2A , with a G-2 :( , was hoping for more.

How are you guys powering the units that you say won't go over 2W?

I was wondering it as well. The 9mm 445nm diodes need at least 2.2A to hit the 3Watt mark. I have build a second BIG BOY and the bench psu 30V/5A hasn't enough juice to get the triple Ben Boost kick in the regulation. The triple Ben Boost was set at 2.2A and is stable during the test run with 3x18650 in parallel.

The 9mm copper module from the GB was too long. I cut a few mm off, smoothend out the front and polisih it. It looks more massive now :D

Mines powered from a 2.5A bench supply, when the ammeter hit 2A, the diode was doing 1900mW , didnt want to push it any further as the numbers wer'ent tallying with what other members were getting.

The diode in my saik I hooked up to the benchtop and tried running it at 5V 2.1A. and got 1990mw out with the 9mm lens. I do understand that most drivers with the fixed resistors will actually be puting out less current at this V so I would need a driver set up to do 2A at 5V not 2A at 4.5V and I'm not there yet. I will post more results after I get that 2nd diode tested better.

Also Blord did you change the factory leads from that PSU? Mine came with Junk leads. 2x Flaminpyro 3A silicone wire works great.
