For the most part I have been pretty successful. It just takes time but I did scratch one and it ended up with a big line through the output when focused. That kind of turned me off. I will get more comfortable with it and I also hope as these get out there some good ideas for it will crop up from those that have done it to simplify the process.

I am still very interested in a chemical that I can submerge it in that wold soften up the glue but not hurt the coating.:)

Interesting idea. I know quite a few chemicals that can remove glue.. But for it to work i need to know on what chemical the coating responds and offcourse what kind of glue it is.

I submerged it in acetone for a few hours and it worked like a charm... then I used a magnifying glass, my fingernail, and a microfiber cloth to get the rest off the outer edge of the lens. The glue was very soft by this point. Still time consuming though...

I hope that didn't damage the coating.

I assume the AR coating accounts for how difficult it is to see the lens(?). If so, the coating was in-tact when I put it in the holder-- it looked the same as before the acetone. I just took some pictures of the unfocused beam, it looks like I've got a little dust but I nothing that looks like damage (to my untrained eye anyway :) ).

(The lines in this image are from a tiled bathroom wall, not the beam itself.)



Does anything look out of the ordinary?

focus it and see if you see any haze or artifacts that are out of the ordinary for single element lenses. Should look like this.

Looks pretty good. If you have a darker surface/wall it would be better for the picture.;)

is this focussed to infinity? Your pics look pretty good to me.. For one lens this might be time consuming but if you out 20 lenses at the same time in the acetone it might be better? anyway i am going to try some thing in a short while too ;)

Yea looks great. The coating on these is almost clear compared to a G-1/2 so I am not sure if you could tell if it took it off or not but that look fine to me.;)

I ran out of aceton so I use concentrated ethanol or pharmacy alcohol for this. This works also fine for me. First I let it soak for a hour in a small bottle to loosened up the bond between lens and cage.
Then I break the metal cage with two pliers. Hold each side of the cage and twist. Use gentle force, just enough to crack open the cage. The lens will become loose.
I put the lens back in the alcohol for another 2 hours. The glue has become so soft that you can scrap it off with the fingernail. :)
The lens has a slightly blueish AR and not completely colorless.
I haven't put it in the barrel yet to test it but no damage can be seen and the AR is intact.

I got a blank lens holder from Jayrob and put the 9mm lens in it but its still JUST too far away from the diode to focus to infinity when screwed all the way home. It has about a 1" to 1-1/2" dot at 20 feet. I reckon another half a mm would do it :(

I'm thinking of chamfering or dremel-ing the last couple of threads off the lens holder so the lens gets closer to the diode. I have a tap on order but the threads look pretty well cut right to the bottom. (I ebayed one as they were $60 locally! - none of the tool supply shops locally stock them and they are special order).

The first one is infinity, the second one is probably focused a little closer...

I was under the impression that Jayrobs holder worked,
Are you sure you diode is pushed in all they way?
