Hey guys!
I don't really post much in here, however I feel like I should share my experience once for all.

Back in 2013 I went for 3 months in the USA (Utah) and I took the chance of buying a 445nm diode and a nice host (you already guessed which one from the title)

here is the bad boy:
https://sites.google.com/site/dtrlpf/home/diodes/9mm-445nm (I got the "445nm 9mm Diode In Copper Module W/2.4A X-Drive & G-2 Glass Lens" one)

and here is the host:
http://laserpointerforums.com/f64/f...ons-including-32600-li-ion-battery-65982.html

I was in contact with both DTR and Jayrob and they were so kind to point me to the right directions with my concerns. :thanks:

I got my stuff, meanwhile I ordered a pair of nice goggles to protect my beloved eyes:
Eagle Pair® 190-540nm Standard Laser Safety Goggles

I had non-laser-related incidents with my eyes in my life and lost the sight temporarily a couple of times (fortunately i'm 100% fine aside being colorblind) and I'm scared to death when it comes to anything that might concern my eyesight.

Anyway, when I moved back to Switzerland I forgot my goggles behind, so I had to wait a bit longer for them to be shipped to me.

Upon receiving them I assembled the whole and started playing with it (with care!), however I was running it at "low" powers since I didn't have proper batteries. I then ordered some 14500 and things started burning much faster :lasergun:

Anyway until today I just kept it and used it, but today, I woke up and decided to take it completely apart and do some changes.

I didn't have the 1.5mm Hex wrench for loosening the screw holding the module, so I had a good reason to go out for 20 minutes and buy one (couldn't find it alone so I had to buy the whole set for 6$)...

my initial project was to also include a 5V USB charger/power supply but I had to discard that due to:
A) the wires were too thin for the amperage
B) 5V isn't enough

Here is the initial setup

Here is the diode and the spring

The X-Drive driver ;)

soldering the ends comme il faut (that's the french way of saying how it's supposed to be done/well done)
IMG_20150728_161307.jpg

Protecting the ends with some Heat-shrink tubing (cool eh?)
IMG_20150728_161510.jpg

the module fits just right!
IMG_20150728_161521.jpg

I put some thermal paste to better heatsink the diode
IMG_20150728_161528.jpg

At this point I started working and thinking at the same time (I mean that I was a bit improvising) and since the laser part was done here are the pieces i had to "fix"
IMG_20150728_161935.jpg

Here I'm taking apart the USB cable (a cheap one I got off ebay)
IMG_20150728_163042.jpg

I notice that the wires are a bit thin (and I couldn't even presolder them!!! those Chinese people...)
IMG_20150728_164009.jpg

Since I only use two 14500 in series I made a nice bridge for the third slot (i used to do dirty tricks with aluminium foil or unsoldered wires..)
IMG_20150728_170123.jpg

And since the SAIK host has a hole for a tripod, why not use it for something else? I soldered the two ends of the battery holder (thanks god I managed not to melt the plastic ;))
IMG_20150728_171520.jpg

Here it is inserted! The two wires are a bit ugly, I'll admit, but hey, they work just great and I'm fine with them.

Here is my very own power supply (I built this thingy at school and it's a blast!) and my laser ready for some tests!

An amp meter was then connected in series to have an idea of how much current I was drawing. Yes I know, this is not what is fed to the diode due to the driver setting it, but it gives a rough idea)
IMG_20150728_172253.jpg

The diode lazes at 10mA already and it's a beauty!
IMG_20150728_172350.jpg

at 300mA it's already burning and you wouldn't want to look at that dot without goggles!
IMG_20150728_172640.jpg

It gets dangerous and complicated to operate the laser, the amp meter and the phone all together, therefore i needed a camera. (and yep... a video will follow!)

Did I forget? When buying the hex wrench I threw 5 bucks into 80 balloons! Guess I'll be popping some...
IMG_20150728_185121.jpg

Just... how many?
IMG_20150728_190307.jpg

4.8 meters (15 Feet) is probably enough hahahaha
IMG_20150728_192555.jpg

I wanted it to be a bit more stable when shooting the massacre so I used a stable support... (sorry it's not very well focused)

Time to clean up...

Bonus point: my two custom builds (Red ones) powered by an USB. One is fit inside a kitchen paper roll (it's sort of ugly and curved but UNIQUE!) and the other one is fit in the Samsung Galaxy Note case (pretty solid) with a nice blue car switch that makes it more fun!

The video was recorded from my phone, the camera and a go-pro. It will take me some time to put it together ;)

I hope you enjoyed looking at the pictures and reading my thread as much as I enjoyed putting this piece of technology together.

Let me know if you spot anything wrong or if you have any kind of suggestion!

Thank you,
Niko

PS: I am super sorry about the size of the pictures. The forum wouldn't resize them and it's just too much work to resize them on my own so I slammed them on my server and voilà.

Thank you :)
yes I am well aware. I stated my reasons as PS in the the first post, however if I have enough time, I will resize and re-upload them all.

it's 4am here so I will now sleep
