Hi guys!

Waiting for the pcb contact board is kinda hard! :)

I hope it will arrive next week so I can get started next weekend!

By the way I will need to get some heat shrinks and would like to know, if I should use some thermal compund between the diode modul and the heatsink?

I so I will get it together with the heatshrinks.

Thermal compound couldn't hurt there but its not absolutely necessary if that makes sense. If you have some handy then by all means put a thin layer around the module.

Heatshrink is normally highly recommended but I actually an uncertain as to where you would actually use it. Your final wiring should only have to be the two wires you have on the module going directly to the contact board and that's it so heatshrink isn't really needed.

I have gauged FastTech to take 7-10 days to deliver to the US so maybe that can help you guess how long it will take to get to you.

Hm, I was thinking of soldering the wires coming from the diode to the wires coming from the contact board, just like it is described in Garys links a few posts above!

Do you think it would be better not to solder wire to wire?

Oh brother! 131 posts on one build and it's not even finished and a kit at that. I feel sorry for any one posting a build in this section at the rate this thread is going it will get buried in no time, oh well I hope it comes out so epic that it gets stickied.

It's a personal preference, it doesn't really matter from a technical standpoint as long as the joints are covered with heat shrink.

Soldering directly to the contact board will give you an assembly that's a little more flexible when you stuff it all together.

Yeah it`s a long way to the top! :D

In this thread it`s not all about this one build, there were several general discussions going on about hosts, heatsinks, heatsinking drivers, the driver itself, the diode module, duty cycles and so on!

In one word, almost everything a total noob want to know when building his first highpowered handheld! ;)

I think it`s better to have it all in only one thread than starting a new one on every topic! And the guys here are very helpful and indeed very patient! :whistle:


I agree Gary! I wasn`t really thinking about this way after reading the instructions from your links to be honest!

Soldering the wires together is normal if you're using a preassembled driver & pill module.

On soldering to the wires on the contact board/driver, the wires that come with the driver (the one from FastTech not DTR) are likely very low gauge. I would not suggest using them. Just remove those and use only the ones that are on the module from DTR.

Either way the wires that are already on the fasttech driver are not going to work anyway since after you remove the components the connections will be broken. You will need to trace on the board where the positive and negative run. Negative is at the very edge of the board and positive in in the center.

Yes, just solder them to the nearest point where you can get positive and negative connection. The contact board gets its negative connection from the soldering to the brass pill on the very outside edge and it gets positive from the end of the cell.

Will I have to remove everything on the board, or just the two parts and the wires on it?

Hi!

The pcb board snaped while trying to press it in the brass ring! It was just a little bit to wide!

Ordered the pcb blank board from Survivallaser and have to wait some more time now!

Meanwhile I will practice to solder wire to wire! ;)
