I already did that once, which is y it's kinda big. I will try it again tomorrow, but right now I'm leaning towards ordering a new (and different) driver. Thanks! If u think of anything else that'd be great too!

What I do when I have issues like this is back trace all my steps and touch up. I also have battery holders with jumpers to test it outside of the host... it helps eliminate each variable step by step.

I don't know if you would have been able to do it with this setup but did you adjust the pot with it on?

My last tip is if you are going to order a new driver atleast order better batteries.... I have received cells that one is dead. It will charge to the voltage quickly but under a load it is were the issue arrises.

Yeah I cant adjust the pot with the laser on. I will also try new batteries. Will those work with a charger for my ultrafires? Thanks

These are the chargers I recommend. Lithium batteries and chargers are not something to go cheap on because of their dangers.

Oh I forgot one thing. I had to grind down the edge of the driver to fit it into the brass ring. Would this affect anything?

lol sorry I missed the link. It will work (I wouldn't trust it enough to not monitor them) but if you plan on getting into this hobby a good charger is a wise investment.

Did you test the driver in the host with a test load prior to connecting it to the diode to be sure it is regulating properly and holding current under load?

I did not. I don't have a test load or DMM yet (I'm new- this is my first build). And I think it is the driver that's problematic.

Could be the battieries too. I´m also having some death LI-Ion battieries which simply died after a while. They are charging very fast and when charged they are also showing 4.2V but under load they are empty within secounds. So with this death battieries I´m getting the exact same behavior like yours.

Can be of course the driver too but without a testload and a DMM you will never know.

I just don´t get why you didn´t buy a DMM and build a testload whereas you already spend more for the laser-parts than a testload and a DMM will ever cost. You can get these things for a few $$ on the bay.

So I checked the batteries and they work fine. That leaves the driver as expected. Thanks for the help everyone.

I definitely plan on buying better batteries and a DMM + testload soon, but for this project it's not necessary.

If the new driver doesn't work, I will be back.

How did you check the cells. Sometimes they can read full charge but then collapse under load. There is also a possibility of a current bottleneck in the host. Maybe a bad contact point.

I drained them in another flashlight and they recharged normally. I can try a different host too - I have a spare c6 lying around.

I'm not sure I understand how a bad host would cause the beam to fade so quickly though...

Good news! I came home today, put it together and it worked! I still don't know the problem but I guess it's solved. Thanks guys for the input.

that's good to hear! you should still heatsink the driver in the pill for peace of mind, but knowing your luck it will bring back your old problem and confuse you again haha, get you a DMM a.s.a.p aswell always good to know the current draw at tail cap and run test loads etc

Jstrawn, if you continue having issues I would be happy to check it for you. FYI the driver current needs to be set using a test load as others have mentioned.
