Laser Output Without a Lens

High everyone! After thorough searching, I need some help with a question.

I am looking to make a 445nm 1+ watt laser with the output going into a clad glass fiber about 2 maters long, and expect the beam at the end of the fiber to not be collimated.

With that in mind, do I still need to place a lens in front of the diode, or can I just place the end of the fiber in its place?

Thanks!

Roger

The light is shot at a vary wide angle without any lens. I'm not sure what exactly you are trying to do but you'd most probably need a lens. Just make sure it's a glass lens..

Thanks! What I'm trying to do is concentrate the laser energy at the end of a fiber. This is typical of a contact laser used in surgery. Perhaps you are correct though, I should at least focus the laser at the fiber end.

If your considering using a DIY laser for medical procedures it will leave you open to lawsuits. Your malpractice insurance may raise your rates when they learn of it.

HaloBlu, thanks for your concerns! With all due respect, I am very aware of my responsibility to my patients, and would never do anything to jeopardize their safety, well being or my malpractice insurance rates.
