Glass lens? dimming LD?

ok so i ran the test properly and got a little over 900mv

well that's 900ma, but that really seems off with a 9v. The square 9v are not capable of that amount of current, so I'm at a loss to explain it. I think they work out to some where around 100mah!

You have 7 diodes in your test load?
The meter does not look to be in Amp mode. but in AC? can we get a full shot of the front of the meter?

I have seven soldered together, but im connecting it at the forth diode. The 9v battery I am using is one of the new lithium 9v. Apparently they have more current then the regular ones. I am trying to get some stats to see if this explains things.

How does one calculate how much power is needed to drive this circuit?

The meter is in amp mode, i consulted the manual as well to confirm. The A is for amps. There is another section for V~ which is the AC volts.

I would provide a pic but I just finished packing my workspace up lol. Its getting late and I didnt want to tie myself down in a project

I have even hooked this up to a DC power supply that is giving 9v at 800ma. I have power supplies that will give more. What would be the ideal amp n volts?

Ok, so everyone is right, the battery is too small. Man, why is the multimeter reporting 900mamps then :/

LM317 + 445 = ~6v will be fine, and the more voltage above this will only generate more heat from the LM317. Current should be between 250ma-1500ma, so your just fine where you are now.

Yes the new lithium 9v have a much higher discharge capacity.

but see, the whole thing that confuses me is that i have an acrylic lens. If i am really pushing close to 1 amp, then the lens should melt. But it works fine. It does get warm after about 30 seconds.

So basically I need to make a battery pack that will have the ability to push more constant miliamps?

The 9v seems to be allowed to only do 100ma, at great peril. But mine works fine. Ive gone through 3 of these batteries playing around.

I have a 12v 1110mA adapter. Should I give that a wirl?, just briefly?

A power meter would tell you the true output of the laser. If You're really pushing ~1a through the acrylic lens it would melt, and since it doesn't appear to be melting it's hard to believe the 1a. You may have a zombie diode that is only putting out a fraction of what it should at 1a, and it would appear bright if this is your 1st 445. Even at 300ma it's bright until you see a 445 at it's true potential first hand. You really need 2 Li-Ion batteries for a 445 to get the most out of it.

cheap wall-warts have a lot of AC ripple you would need filter caps.

Man, If it is a zombie, im gonna be pretty upset (who wouldnt be lol) I mean, that means i'll have to get another one since the vendor doesn't do returns.

And yeah, Ive even used an acrylic magnifying glass and it hasnt melted either.

I mean, it doesnt make sense that its pulling one amp from even that lithuim 9v. The stats say it cant do more then 50ma without getting hot.

mine batteries dont even get warm.

Yea there is something not right in the measurements 900ma is not coming from a 9v, so that I'm not sure what to tell you now. Reading that amount of current on the test load at the output of the LM317 circuit seems impossible with your power source. I would really like to see your driver circuit when you get a chance tomorrow to upload a picture.

So I am starting to wonder the same thing... maybe Aixiz beefed up their acrylics? Because I am pushing 1.25A through my 445 with an acrylic (even at the disregard of others... I am devious like that), and it is... lasting. I have played around with it a lot now and it hasn't shown a decrease in power. I *am* using two (waiting on a third) 10440s in series, so I should be able to push the right amount of current through.

And I tested it multiple times with my multimeter with my test-load and it's working fine. *Further*, the dot outshines my 200mW green laser, so it would make sense that it's around 1W or so because of the 20% reduction factor.

Maybe my resistor is too small in terms of watts? i think its a half watt.

Im going to grab a good sized (amp wise) battery tomorrow and see what happens. my glass lens should be coming in too, so I can do this properly.

Im not sure if mine is decreasing, I think ive just gotten somewhat more used to the the brightness. But its interesting to hear you have enough power and are still experiencing the same thing with the lens.

I really think that Aixiz must have boosted the quality of their default lenses... because I had another 445 a while back too and it didn't kill the lens either.
